Chicago Bears tight end John Gilmore was arrested yesterday and charged with possession of marijuana after allegedly refusing to leave a bar and getting into a "small tussle" with police.

"It was a small tussle, nothing serious," police spokesman Marcel Bright said. "He refused to be handcuffed."

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near the Leg Room, a bar in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood, Bright said.

Gilmore was arrested for trespassing, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than 2 1/2 grams of marijuana. He was released from police custody after posting bond, Bright said.

Gilmore signed with the Bears in 2002 after being cut by New Orleans at the end of his rookie year training camp. The former Penn State player appeared in all 16 regular-season games for Chicago in 2005.

A Bears spokesman did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

LINEBACKER WIMBLEY SIGNS SIX-YEAR DEAL

Cleveland signed first-round pick Kamerion Wimbley to a six-year, $23.7 million deal yesterday.

The linebacker, taken 13th overall, is the second player selected in the first round to reach a deal. No. 1 overall pick Mario Williams signed with the Houston Texans before the draft.

"It shows the fans and the team I'm ready to be a Brown," Wimbley said.

His agent, Joe Linta, said the deal includes $9.3 million in guaranteed money and is a 9.5 percent increase over what the 13th pick received last year. The agreement means Wimbley will be the first top pick to open training camp on time with the Browns since Courtney Brown in 2000.

"I told these guys we have two choices. We can finish this thing and go first or sit around and play chess until the No. 12 and No. 14 get done," Linta said.

RUNNING BACK WILLIAMS BREAKS ARM IN GAME

Running back Ricky Williams broke his left arm in the second quarter of the visiting Toronto Argonauts' 26-23 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders last night and is out indefinitely.

Argonauts coach Mike "Pinball" Clemons confirmed the injury but did not specify which bone was broken.

"He has a broken arm, so he's going to be out for a little while," Clemons said.

Williams, who was not available for interviews, left the game midway through the second quarter after a 3-yard gain when he was tackled by several Saskatchewan players. X-rays taken at a Regina hospital revealed a broken bone.

HAMSTRING SIDELINES EX-OLYMPIAN BLOOM

Philadelphia receiver and former Olympian Jeremy Bloom has yet to practice because of a strained hamstring and is listed as day to day.

Bloom, a two-time Olympic skier and fifth-round draft pick, tweaked his hamstring working out with quarterback Donovan McNabb in Arizona. He underwent an MRI on Thursday, the first day of training camp.

"He does have a strained hamstring, and we'll take this thing day by day," coach Andy Reid said yesterday.

The 5-foot-9, 172-pound Bloom was picked to help the Eagles' special teams and wide receiver corps. The 147th overall selection, Bloom had 24 receptions for an average of 19.1 yards per catch in two seasons at Colorado. He returned 47 punts at 13.5 yards per return and 25 kickoffs at 25.1 yards per return.

RUNNING BACK, CORNER AGREE TO CONTRACTS

New York signed fourth-round pick Leon Washington and sixth-round choice Drew Coleman yesterday.

Washington, a running back out of Florida State, became the first player in the Bobby Bowden era to score a touchdown five ways (rushing, receiving, punt return, kickoff return and fumble recovery). He finished with 2,041 rushing yards, ranking 10th in school history.

Coleman, a cornerback out of TCU, had 49 tackles and five interceptions in his two-year career with the Horned Frogs after starting at Trinity Valley Community College.

COWBOYS

PRO BOWLER WITTEN AGREES TO $29M DEAL

Tight end and two-time Pro Bowler Jason Witten agreed to a seven year, $29 million contract with the Cowboys yesterday.

The deal includes a $6 million signing bonus, a guaranteed $6 million option bonus next March on top of a $500,000 base salary this season, team officials said.

Witten, 24, caught 87 passes for 980 yards in 2004. Last year, he had 66 catches for 757 yards.
