Two people whose boat sank off Diamond Head yesterday were rescued last night by the tour vessel Navatek I, which responded to a Coast Guard radio call for assistance from ships in the area.

The two boaters, a 20-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, said their 14-foot skiff sank about four miles offshore about 3 p.m., Coast Guard Chief Marsha Delaney said. A tugboat towing a barge spotted the two in the water about 1 1/2 miles offshore but could not pick them up.

The tugboat contacted the Coast Guard. The Navatek was in the area when the call for assistance was broadcast and went to pick up the boaters at 7 p.m. They were not injured.

WITNESS SOUGHT IN VAN INCIDENT

A 50-year-old man who was injured Monday while trying to stop a van from leaving a parking lot at Honolulu Community College remained in critical but stable condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

The man told police investigators that a woman was driving the van, but witnesses interviewed by police said a man appeared to be the driver.

Police were looking for the van and driver and ask that anyone who witnessed the incident, and who has not talked with investigators, to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 529-3115.

The van was described as white with many stickers on it.

The injured man sustained head and leg injuries after being dragged while hanging on to the van's driver-side door.

The van driver knocked the man off the van by driving close to a guardrail piling, causing the man to hit the piling and fall, at which point the driver sped off.

CHILD SAFETY-SEAT MEASURE SIGNED

Starting Jan. 1, children ages 4 through 7 will be required to use passenger safety seats or booster seats under a bill signed into law yesterday by Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona.

Currently, safety seat use is required only through age 3.

Only children who are more than 4 feet 9 inches tall or weigh more than 40 pounds are exempt from the requirement, unless the vehicle has only lap belts.

The booster seats protect children who are too small to wear regular seat belts properly by raising them high enough so the lap belt rests high on the thighs and across their chests.

HOMELESS CLINIC SEEKS DONATIONS

A free health clinic at the state's new homeless transitional shelter in Kaka'ako is asking for donations of medical supplies.

The clinic is a volunteer project of students and faculty physicians from the John A. Burns School of Medicine. It operates every Tuesday at the Kaka'ako shelter from 7 to 10 p.m.

More medical supplies — ranging from bandages to testing equipment — are needed.

LEISURE FACILITIES TO BE DISCUSSED

The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board Parks and Recreation Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Koko Head District Park Community Center, 423 Kaumakani St.

The meeting will include discussion and a recommendation to the full Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board on the public's concern for the location of the archery range at the Koko Head Shooting Complex, the bike rack at the Koko Head Botanical Gardens and updates on the Goeas Field and dog park.

BEACH CLEANUP SET FOR SATURDAY

The Waikiki Ohana Workforce of the Waikiki Improvement Association is sponsoring a beach cleanup Saturday.

Volunteers should meet at 7 a.m. for a briefing at the Duke Kahanamoku Statue at Kuhio Beach Park. Transportation will be provided to Hilton Hawaiian Village for breakfast, then the cleanup ends back at Kuhio Beach Park at 9 a.m.
