USF's McGuigan solid in final game

Senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan sparked the University of San Francisco baseball team to its first NCAA Regional appearance, and most successful season at 39-23.
The 2002 Mid-Pacific graduate and West Coast Conference co-Pitcher of the Year threw seven shutout innings in relief in the Dons' 6-4 loss to Manhattan in an NCAA regional elimination game Sunday at Lincoln, Neb.
"I just came in and tried to execute a role," McGuigan said on USF's Web site. "Your job as a reliever is to keep your team in the game."
San Diego junior second baseman Keoni Ruth (Kamehameha '03) and the Toreros (33-25) reached the NCAA Regional in Fullerton, Calif. USD went 1-2 in the regional, and was eliminated by Fresno State, 9-8, on Sunday.
SOFTBALL
Brigham Young senior first baseman Ianeta Le'i (Iolani '02) was selected to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America second team.
Tennessee freshman infielder Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05) and the No. 5 Lady Volunteers (61-12) fell one win short of playing in the Women's College World Series best-of-three national championship round after losing to No. 3 Arizona, 6-0, Sunday in Oklahoma City.
MEN'S GOLF
University of Nevada senior Casey Watabu (Kaua'i '01) was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America/PING All-Southwest Region.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Cal Poly Pomona senior Katrina Holmberg (King Kekaulike of Pukalani) was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic College Division All-District 8 women's at-large team.
Holmberg earned a 3.81 GPA in business.
Holmberg was also named to the California Collegiate Athletic Association first team as an at-large selection.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Cal State Los Angeles senior guard Monica Tokoro (Iolani '01 of 'Aiea) was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic College Division All-District 8 second team.
Tokoro earned a 3.52 GPA in criminal justice.
COMMITMENT
Maui High's William Pua'a committed to the University of Oregon men's track and field program, the school announced.
Pua'a, the 2006 Hawai'i state champion in the pole vault, will likely compete in the pole vault and long jump.
Iolani's Vinnie Nip and Barry Kang, both starters for the state champion Raiders basketball team this year, will continue their athletic and academic careers at Occidental College in Los Angeles, according to Alan Walls, owner and camp director of the Maui Sports Academy.
Maryknoll's Tyler Tsukazaki and Maui's Gene Rivera will attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., Walls said. Rivera spent the past two years honing his skills at Butte Junior College in Butte, California.
FOOTBALL/TRACK AND FIELD
Occidental (Los Angeles) senior Derek Turbin (Punahou '02) was his school's selection as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Occidental Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Turbin, an American Studies major, signed with the Rauma Sea City Storms, a Finnish professional football team, to play defensive back and receiver.
