Wide receiver Jordan Slye has requested a release from his University of Hawai'i football scholarship.
UH coach June Jones said Slye's decision was based on "personal reasons."
Jones would not elaborate except to say, "I'll give him his release."
Jones said Slye, a fifth-year senior, is expected to transfer to Clark Atlanta (Ga.) University, an NCAA Division II school, where he will be allowed to play this coming season. The NCAA does not require a waiting period when a football player transfers from Division I to Division II.
Slye did not return messages left at his home in Seattle. His cell phone did not accept messages yesterday.
Slye, who is listed as 6 feet 4 and 210 pounds, was a member of the University of Washington football team for two seasons, but opted to leave when the Huskies changed head coaches.
In 2004, he played for Compton (Calif.) College. He transferred to UH in August 2005.
Slye was withheld from the first three games last season because of a delay in processing his Compton transcripts. He made two receptions for 29 yards and caught a two-point conversion against Boise State, but missed the next three games while his transcripts were audited. He played in another four games, earning the start at left wideout in the victory over Utah State, but missed the season finale because of a knee injury.
He finished with seven catches for 104 yards and two conversion receptions.
Slye was held out of spring practice in April to focus on his school work. He was not listed on the recent depth chart.
"We're going to miss his height on the outside," said Ron Lee, who coaches the UH receivers. "I'm sorry he's not coming back. He was a good kid, and the players liked him."
