Q. I have just started working at an advertising agency and am getting overwhelmed in working with my boss. He is always so busy. I can't seem to catch him to get his feedback or approval on projects. When he does communicate with me, it seems like it is always to tell me I have done something wrong. How do I show my boss I am capable of getting my tasks completed and able to work with him?
A. Bosses are always busy with what they need to do. They have appointments and goals that need to be met. You have to work around their schedule to meet their expectations and deadlines. This is most definitely possible with a little work between you and your boss. Try following these tips:
1. Set up weekly meetings with your boss. By setting up weekly meetings with your boss, both of you can work together to do a status check on pending projects or questions. These meetings can be as short as five minutes. Furthermore, setting up routine meetings will help you build a better relationship with your boss.
2. Make a list of questions of what you need from your boss. Go into these meetings prepared with what you need. Your boss will appreciate this and see you are capable of getting things done.
3. Ask your boss. Some bosses work better through e-mail; some bosses work better when people ask in person or on the phone. Find out what works better with your boss. This will speed up the process of taking care of matters.
4. Take notes. When your boss asks or tells you something, take notes so you get it done correctly and don't have to ask your boss to repeat it at a future date.
5. Keep your boss informed. Your boss always likes to know what is going on. It is always better to be informed than out of the loop unless your boss says it is not necessary.
