8 claims filed here for flood insurance

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i homeowners filed eight flood insurance claims following the recent heavy rains that deluged parts of the state, according to the National Flood Insurance Program.

On O'ahu's Windward side alone an estimated 111 homes suffered some kind of flood damage from last week's rains, the American Red Cross reported yesterday.

The federally backed flood insurance program processed eight claims statewide between Feb. 21 and March 2. And there probably won't be many more claims filed from the flooding, said Carol Tyau-Beam, who helps coordinate the insurance program locally for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Most people don't carry flood insurance unless required to do so by their mortgage lenders, she said.

"A lot of people think their homeowners' insurance covers floods," Tyau-Beam said. "But it doesn't."

State Farm Insurance also reported a low level of flood claims for homes and automobiles.
