Man guilty in '05 abduction, assault

A 25-year-old man was found guilty yesterday of abducting a woman who was sitting in her car in Manoa last year, ordering her to drive to a secluded area and sexually assaulting her.
Shannon K. Kalahiki was found guilty after he pleaded no contest to the first-degree sex assault, kidnapping and related charges.
Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto scheduled Kalahiki's sentencing for July 11. The sex assault charge carries a maximum 20-year prison term.
The abduction on March 23 last year was one of two unrelated sex assaults in Manoa within a week.
In the other case, a woman walking on Sea View Avenue on March 28 was forced into a car by as many as five men and sexually assaulted, police said. She was released near a dormitory on the University of Hawai'i campus.

RAID NETS $300 IN ICE; TWO ARRESTED
Police Crime Reduction Unit officers yesterday arrested two people and recovered about $300 worth of crystal methamphetamine in a raid on a home on the 1000 block of Kopke Street.
The 7:15 a.m. raid was in response to complaints from neighbors about drug dealing at the house, said Crime Reduction Unit supervisor Sgt. Teddy Chun.
The suspects, a 62-year-old man and 65-year-old woman, were released without charges pending further investigation.

THREE WOMEN RESCUED ON HIKING TRAIL
Fire rescue specialists last night found three young women who had gotten lost on a trail above Pupukea.
Firefighters began the search at 7:05 p.m. and established cell phone contact with the women, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said. The women reported no injuries and had two cell phones but no light, Tejada said.
Rescuers found them at 10:40 p.m. The Fire Department's helicopter, an engine company and Rescue 2 were involved in the search.

CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED
A 41-year-old Kea'au man died Monday from injuries he suffered in a head-on collision on Saddle Road west of the 35-mile marker.
Jack H. Mae was traveling west down a hill, on the wrong side of the road, in a 1990 To-yota two-door sedan shortly before 4:25 p.m., when his vehicle collided with an oncoming 2001 Toyota pickup truck.
The two people in the truck were not seriously hurt.

7-MONTH-OLD BOY IN STATE CUSTODY
State Child Protective Services has taken custody of a 7-month-old boy and asked police to investigate the child's injuries, which include multiple bruises to the chest and a healing fracture of the left tibia.
The injuries were reported by Tripler Army Medical Center last Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Police had made no arrests as of yesterday afternoon.

POLICE CATCH UP WITH FUGITIVE
Police arrested fugitive Elden Paul Cox in Waikiki on Saturday, two days after he eluded police in Manoa while in the company of a 22-year-old female visitor from Japan who had been reported missing in early February.
Cox, 45, was arrested on four outstanding warrants.
Kanako Hibino, a vacationing student from Japan who was reported missing Feb. 10, was found by police Thursday on the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus.
She returned to Japan Thursday night, according to police missing persons investigator Philip Camero. Hibino reportedly withdrew more than $18,000 from her bank account while she was with Cox.

'FONG' POST OFFICE GETS HOUSE OK
The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday approved legislation to name the Kapalama post office after the late U.S. Sen. Hiram Fong.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Daniel Akaka and passed the Senate Friday.
The bill now goes to the White House, where President Bush is expected to sign it into law.

Our Savior Lutheran School is hosting "An Evening in 'Aiea," a gourmet food-sampling fund-raiser, on April 22 from 6 to 9 p.m.
