Kusutani captures 10K race

Sayuri Kusutani won the 29th Straub/Kapiolani Women's 10K Sunday, finishing in 38 minutes, 47 seconds.
Susie Rutherford placed second in 39:01 and Louise Brasen third in 39:16.

SURFING
SULLIVAN ADVANCES
Hawai'i's Pancho Sullivan defeated Australia's Mick Fanning yesterday to advance to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia.
Sullivan posted an early 8.33 score (out of 10) then held off Fanning, 15.40-12.74, in one of seven final heats of the third round.
Kaua'i's Andy Irons is the only other surfer from Hawai'i still in the competition.
GOLF
UH FINISHES SEVENTH
Dale Gammie shot a final-round 7-over 79 as the University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished seventh in the 11-school SJSU Spartan Invitational at San Jose, Calif.
Gammie tied for eighth at 153. The Rainbow Wahine had a two-round total of 638.
Fresno State's Laura Luethke (70—145) and host San Jose State (611) won the titles.
BASEBALL
HPU SPLITS IN FINALE
Danny Lee doubled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 6-5, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park.
Cody Johns hit a two-run homer and RBI double as Grand Canyon (9-14) defeated the Sea Warriors (14-13) in the second game, 8-3, to close out the series.
In the opener, Lee's hit drove in Grandon Costa, who opened the inning with a double.
Mario Ramirez took a three-hit shutout into the seventh when Grand Canyon took advantage of three walks, two errors and two singles to score five runs, four of which were unearned. Ramirez (3-1) finished with a five-hitter and eight strikeouts.
SOFTBALL
BYUH LOSES TWINBILL
Despite strong pitching by freshman Tess Haertling, Brigham Young-Hawai'i was swept in a doubleheader against visiting Concordia (Irvine, Calif.) yesterday.
Heartling pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts and three walks, but BYUH lost 3-1 in the first game. Concordia (20-1) beat BYUH (5-9) in the second game, 4-0, as Kory Briggs and Alexandra Ariaz teamed on a three-hitter.
Heartling gave up a two-run homer to Caitlyn Senkbeil in the third and an RBI single to Jamie Van Dijk in the sixth. Natalie Brown spaced seven hits and struck out eight for Concordia.
WRESTLING
CHUN MINES SILVER
Roosevelt High graduate Clarissa Chun won a silver medal in the 105-pound (48 kilograms) division at the Klippan Ladies Golden Grand Prix, which ended Sunday in Klippan, Sweden.
The U.S. finished second, two points shy of Russia, in the tournament.
