Film festival set for May in Waikoloa

The Big Island Film Festival — in cooperation with the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, the Hilton Waikoloa Village and the Waikoloa Land Co. — is planned for May 18-21 in Waikoloa. The event will feature movies, music, filmmaker and actor salutes, an awards brunch and golf tournament. travel talk: "Traveling to Peru Alone," a free travel talk by Chris Christensen, will be held at 7 p.m. March 30 at the Liliha Public Library meeting room. Christensen has traveled to Peru 10 times since the 1970s and sets off again in May. His talk will focus on Peru's capital Lima, and the high-altitude city of Cuzco, one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the Western Hemsphere; the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu, and other centers for sun worship. Alaskan tall-ship cruise: The Maple Leaf offers 11-night trips that focus on Alaska's natural and cultural history.
The 92-foot, 14-passenger vessel stops at Juneau, Ketch-ikan and Sitka and visits estuaries popular with grizzly bears and dolphins, harlequin ducks, birds and seals. Passengers go ashore on remote beaches and into virgin forests.
The cruise ship uses an inflatable boat to go into Tracy Arm Fiord to see bald eagles, seals, sea lions and humpback whales. In and among the glaciers, the seals are having pups.
