Oklahoma St. shuts out UH in softball

Jessica Hoppock pitched a two-hitter to lift Oklahoma State to a 5-0 victory over Hawai'i in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium last night.
Hawai'i is 14-11. Oklahoma State is 13-12.
Hoppock, a right-hander, struck out seven and walked two.
Shanel Scott went 3 for 4 for the Cowgirls. Kim Kaye hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
In other games yesterday: Northwestern defeated Kansas, 1-0 and Longwood (Va), 4-3; and San Diego State defeated Longwood 4-2.
BASEBALL
UH-HILO, W. ILLINOIS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Western Illinois, 8-6, in the first game of a doubleheader at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona, yesterday.
John Paul Shore pitched a two-hitter to lead the Leathernecks to a 1-0 victory in the second game.
Both games were seven innings. UH-Hilo is 8-15, Western Illinois 3-15.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
UH'S MACKEY FINISHES 4TH IN 100 BACKSTROKE
University of Hawai'i's Nicole Mackey finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at Athens, Ga.
UH divers QiongJie Huang and Rui Wang placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3-meter springboard.
Mackey finished in a school record 53.35 in the 100 backstroke. She was sixth after the preliminaries. Auburn's Rachel Goh won the event in 53.07.
Huang scored 353.45 points, Wang had 345.70. UH's Megan Farrow was 10th with 308.45. Blythe Hartley of Southern California won with 372 points.
Georgia leads the championship with 339 points. UH is 12th with 67 points.
UC Irvine sophomore Chelsea Nagata, a 2004 graduate of Maui High, finished seventh in the 100 butterfly.
The third and final day of the championship is today.
WATER POLO
RAINBOWS HOST NO. 1 USC IN EXHIBITION
Fifth-ranked Hawai'i plays the best collegiate team in the country at 4:30 p.m. today at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Only the match against top-ranked USC is an exhibition.
The Trojans (16-0) are here training on spring break, so quarters will be stretched to 11 minutes and the result won't count.
USC beat Hawai'i, 13-5, last month at the Santa Barbara Tournament. The Rainbow Wahine (8-6) play a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at USC on April 14. Their final four matches, along with the MPSF and NCAA Championships, are on the road.
They are home for their next seven and the opposition includes USC, second-ranked Stanford (March 28) and third-ranked UCLA (March 31).
"USC, UCLA and Stanford are the teams to beat," UH coach Michel Roy said. "We're next. We're getting there. We're getting better together."
The Trojans lead the country in offense, averaging just over 12 goals a game, and are sixth on defense (4.8 goals).
TRACK AND FIELD
RAINBOWS' WICHMANN THIRD IN HEPTATHLON
University of Hawai'i's Annett Wichmann finished third in the two-day heptathlon at the Northridge Open Multi-Events, yesterday, at Northridge, Calif.
Wichmann set a school record with 4,940 points in the seven-event heptathlon. Yesterday, she placed third in the 800 meters (2:28.55), fourth in the javelin (111-4.5) and fifth in the long jump (17-4.5).
Sacramento State's Roshena Duree won with 5,242 points.
Rainbow Wahine Mallory Gilbert finished ninth with 3,997 points.
