THE MAN BEHIND PRECIOUS MTOTSE
If you follow the cases of fictional Botswanan sleuth Precious Mtotse in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" and its sequels, you won't want to miss author Alexander McCall Smith at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa at 7 tonight.
Expect self-deprecating Brit wit (his amateur musical group in Edinburgh is called the Really Terrible Orchestra), a reading from his new series, "The Sunday Philosophy Club," and tales on all kinds of topics — he was born in what is now Zimbabwe, worked in Botswana and is a professor of medical law. It's in the Campus Center Ballroom. Free.

FINAL WORD
"I'm walking my dog, picking up poop, when a garbage truck rides by and the man yells, 'Hey, Carmela, I hear you don't take crap from nobody.' "
