HPU, UH-Hilo ousted in NCAA D-II softball

Seattle University's Jane Purdy hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 11-9, yesterday and eliminate the Vulcans from the NCAA Division II West Regional softball tournament in Bakersfield, Calif.
Earlier, Cal State Stanislaus, fueled by a six-run first inning, ousted Hawai'i Pacific, 10-2. The game was called after six innings because of an eight-run differential rule.
HPU finished 27-20.
The Sea Warriors were out-hit 13-5, but left the bases loaded twice, and stranded nine runners.
HPU's Kara Wedemeyer batted 2 for 3, and finished 5 for 7 in the tournament. Pitcher Courtney Kessell took the loss.
In the Vulcans' defeat, Leo Sing Chow was 4 for 4 with three RBIs. Mika Asamura was 3 for 5. The Vulcans out-hit Seattle, 21-13.
UH-Hilo finished 29-19.

BYUH WOMEN REACH NCAA DIVISION II FINAL
The second-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i's women's tennis team reached its ninth consecutive NCAA Division II championship final with a 5-1 victory over No. 3 West Florida in the semifinals at Kansas City, Mo., yesterday.
The Seasiders (26-0) play No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) in today's final. The Pirates (30-0) defeated No. 4 Lynn, 5-1.
Armstrong Atlantic defeated BYUH last year to end the Seasiders' three-year hold on the NCAA title.
The Seasiders took a 2-1 lead after the doubles, getting wins from their No. 1 team of Jing Jing Liu and Ramona Husaru and No. 3 Petra Teller and Gurianna Korinihona.
"We've had some unusual things happen to us this week," BYUH head coach Dave Porter said. "(Doubles partners) Julia (Ustyuzhanina) was stung by a bee and Tetyana (Bula) has had an impacted wisdom tooth. They both have played through that this week, although today they lost because of those things. We really need them tomorrow."
BYUH won three singles to clinch the match. Liu defeated Suzanne Cavalcante, 6-2, 6-1; Bula stopped Paola Arevalo, 6-3, 6-2 and Petra Teller defeated Ann Claire Beard, 6-2, 6-1.
SURFING
HAWAI'I JUNIORS DROP TO SECOND IN BRAZIL
Hawai'i dropped into second place after the sixth day of competition in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships yesterday.
Yesterday's heats were held in waves of 2 to 4 feet at Maresias Beach, Sao Paulo, Brazil, but heavy rain and onshore winds made for difficult conditions.
Hawai'i has eight surfers still in contention with two days of competition remaining. Australia is in first place with 10 surfers still in contention.
Casey Brown of the Big Island and Alex Smith of Kaua'i remained undefeated in their respective divisions.
Brown won his fifth round heat to stay in the winner's bracket of the boys under 18 division. Smith also won his fifth round heat in the winner's bracket of the boys under 16 division.
Six other Hawai'i surfers advanced in the consolation bracket: Kyle Ramey in the boys under 18 division, Granger Larsen and Tyler Newton in the boys under 16 division, and Monica Byrne-Wickey, Bethany Hamilton and Lipoa Kahaleuahi in the girls under 18 division.
Hawai'i surfers eliminated yesterday were Nathan Rex and Torrey Meister in the boys under 18 division, and Lani Hunter in the girls under 18 division.
KENNELLY FINISHES FIFTH IN TAHITI CONTEST
Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly tied for fifth place in the women's division of the Billabong Pro Tahiti yesterday.
The final day of the contest was staged in 4- to 6-foot waves at Teahupoo, Tahiti.
Australia's Melanie Redman-Carr won the contest and the $10,000 first prize. She defeated fellow Australian Chelsea Georgeson in the final, 13.5-10.44.
Kennelly lost to Australian Layne Beachley in the quarterfinals, 11.0-9.6.
The men's division of the Billabong Pro Tahiti completed its fourth round yesterday.
Kaua'i's Danny Fuller won his heat to advance to the quarterfinals. Fred Pataccahia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore and Bruce Irons of Kaua'i are also in the quarterfinals.
