A long paniolo weekend in Honoka'a

Wild, wild west: Hawai'i's paniolo tradition will be celebrated in Honoka'a with a Western Weekend, May 26 to 29. Festivities on that Memorial Day weekend kick off on May 26 with a 3 p.m. barbecue of Big Island grass-finished beef, and music by Danny Estocado at 4 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. is the Paniolo Parade. The Western Weekend Block Party follows the parade in front of the Old Botelho Building; at 8 p.m. is the Saloon Girl Contest. On May 27, an expanded Farmer's Market begins at 7 a.m. The Western Weekend Ag Fest goes on from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 27, with food booths, agricultural displays and demonstrations, a petting zoo and entertainment. On May 28 and 29, the Hawaii Saddle Club presents its 50th annual Memorial Day rodeo, with both traditional and Hawaiian events, beginning at noon; tickets are $7 each day, with keiki under 12 admitted free.
