KHON-TV yesterday said it has arranged for cable channel OC16 to rebroadcast the entire two-hour "American Idol" finale for communities on O'ahu, the Big Island and Maui that experienced interruptions to cable TV service Wednesday night.

The rebroadcast will be at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Nearly 100,000 Oceanic cable TV subscribers on three islands missed portions of Wednesday night's highly anticipated season finales of "American Idol" and "Lost" because of power problems.

Norman Santos, vice president of operations for Oceanic Time Warner Cable, said a power supply unit in Kalama Valley connected to undersea cables serving Maui and the Big Island failed for 24 minutes.

FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF TO HONOR LIVES LOST

Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered that state flags be flown Monday at half-staff from sunrise to noon out of respect for veterans who have sacrificed their lives for the nation, and at full-staff from noon to sunset as "a symbol of our living nation," a statement from the governor's office said yesterday.

Monday is Memorial Day.

RECOVERY CENTER SHIFTING FOCUS

The state-federal Disaster Recovery Center at Kahala Mall will become a U.S. Small Business Administration Business Recovery Center on Tuesday. The center, and others like it, was opened to help residents and businesses following damaging floods in March.

The center will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Also beginning Tuesday, the SBA Outreach Center at Kualoa Ranch will have new hours: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

On Kaua'i, the SBA center will reopen Tuesday at 4280 Rice St. in Lihu'e. Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

TEEN DIVER NIPPED BY SHARK

LAHAINA, Maui — A 15-year-old Maui boy suffered a minor cut on his left knee when he was nipped by a gray reef shark while diving with friends off Lana'i on Wednesday.

The divers reportedly poked the shark with a fishing spear and it turned and bit the boy. He was brought to Mala Wharf in Lahaina by a private boat at about 5:45 p.m. and was treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Because the incident occurred offshore, the Department of Land and Natural Resources did not issue shark advisories to swimmers, said Russell Sparks of the Division of Aquatic Resources.

ANNUAL BEACH CLEANUP SUNDAY

Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks is sponsoring the second annual Kailua Beach Cleanup from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday beginning at the boat ramp at the Lanikai end of the park.

All participants who volunteer two hours or more will receive a voucher for a free kayak rental from Kailua Sailboards. There will be hourly drawings for prizes from Island Snow, Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks and Sweet Stop.

Last year's effort produced more than 30 garbage bags of debris from eight sites on the beach. Data will be recorded about the trash that is collected and sent to Ocean Conservancy, which will include the information in national and local reports.

AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT CULTURAL CENTER

The author of a book on Japanese language schools here and on the West Coast will speak at the Japanese Cultural Center tomorrow.

Noriko Asato, author of "Teaching Mikadoism: The Origin of Community Support and Conflict with Japanese Language Schools in Hawai'i, California and Washington, 1919-1927," will speak from 10 a.m. to noon at the cultural center's first-floor gallery theater.

Asato, associate professor of Japanese at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will speak about the origins of Japanese language schools in the early 20th century.
