Island paddlers take eighth

Team Hawai'i placed eighth in the Hawaiki Nui Va'a canoe races in Tahiti last week.

The event features three separate long-distance races over three days. It is the biggest paddling event in Tahiti, and more than 70 crews participated.

Team Hawai'i placed second in the 27-mile race on the first day, then took 25th in the 16-mile race on the second day, and then was fourth in the 36-mile race on the third day.

Team Hawai'i had eight paddlers from clubs around the state, and one paddler from California (Danny Ching).

The Hawai'i paddlers were Kai Bartlett, Kekoa Cramer, Mike Judd, Manny Kulukulualani, Thibert Lussiaa, Andrew Penny, Karel Tresnak Jr. and Tim Twigg-Smith.

Shell Va'a from Tahiti won the first and third races, and placed first in the overall standings. Shell Va'a also won the Moloka'i Hoe last month.


SURFING

PATACCHIA ADVANCES TO ROUND 3 IN BRAZIL

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the third round of the Nova Schin Festival men's surfing contest yesterday.

The second round was completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at Imbituba, Brazil.

Patacchia defeated Brazil's Pedro Henrique, 13.6-9.43, in the second round.

Kaua'i's Roy Powers was eliminated by Australian Jake Paterson, 13.67-12.0.

Patacchia and Kaua'i's Andy Irons are the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the third round.

BYUH RECEIVES NO. 3 SEED FOR DII TOURNEY

Brigham Young-Hawai'i received the third seed in the NCAA II Pacific Region women's volleyball tournament that begins Thursday at Cal State-San Bernardino.

The Seasiders (20-0) will face No. 6 seed Cal State-Los Angeles (17-8) on Thursday.

In other first-day matches: top seed Cal State-San Bernardino (25-1) plays No. 8 seed Central Washington (19-7), No. 4 Seattle Pacific (24-2) faces No. 5 Chico State (20-5) and No. 2 UC San Diego (23-2) plays No. 7 Western Washington (18-6).
