While pleased to have been named national Offensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan had a more pressing concern yesterday.
"I'm looking for parking," said Brennan, who decided to spend his free day at a Pop Warner game cheering on a relative of UH wideout Chad Mock. "I remember playing Pop Warner growing up. For a lot of kids, that's the base for their love of football. It's fun to go back and watch it."
As in receiving the award, Brennan wanted to show support for a teammate. "That award is cool, and I'm excited, but obviously I have to give credit to everyone," Brennan said.
In Saturday's 63-10 road victory over Utah State, Brennan passed for 413 yards and six touchdowns. With five games remaining, Brennan's total of 39 touchdown passes is the school's single-season record. He played only 36 snaps.
"The O-line did a great job," Brennan said. "The receivers did a great job. And Nate (Ilaoa) obviously got me that award. What can I say about Nate?"
Ilaoa caught six passes for 155 yards, including two shovel plays that spanned 60 yards each.
"There's such unbelievable talent here," Brennan said. "We're just having a lot of fun together."
Brennan, a junior who is in his second season at UH, said a significant difference is the players have a better grasp of the offense.
"Last year, coach (June) Jones was still trying to teach guys coverages and how to run off," Brennan said. "He was teaching the basics. Now that everyone understands the basics, he's able to take us to the next level."
On Saturday night, UH was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter. Football analyst Mark May awarded Brennan a "sticker" for his play. But the Warriors, who took a charter flight back to Honolulu after the game, had little time to watch.
"I was the last one going through security (at Ogden Airport)," Brennan recalled, "and everyone was in a room watching ESPN. I heard everyone cheering. I was trying to hurry through security. As I got close to the room, everybody started booing really loud. I was like, 'What's going on?' I looked at the TV, and I saw my face and some stats. And that was it. I saw one second of it."
DE LETULI SIDELINED
Defensive end Laupepa Letuli said he probably will miss up to three games after suffering torn scar tissue in his left knee. Earlier this season, he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in that knee. He said he will undergo an MRI today.
Defensive end Rocky Savaiigaea said his sprained left ankle is "stiff." It is not known if Savaiigaea will be available for Saturday's game against visiting Louisiana Tech.
Head coach June Jones and defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville said an offensive lineman might switch to defensive end. A decision will be made today. Glanville said the Warriors are set at nose tackle.
Defensive end Fale Laeli, who has missed six games because of a knee injury, might be available.
"I've done what I can do, which is burn incense and sacrifice two chickens," defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold said. "Whatever we can do to get him back."
