Two new songs from Jack Johnson will appear on the CD soundtrack of the surf documentary "A Broke Down Melody," out on Tuesday.
The two tracks — "Home" and "Let It Be Sung" — are the first new studio recordings from Johnson since the release of the soundtrack from the film "Curious George." That CD, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 music chart in February, has sold more than 1 million copies.
Originally released on the surf film market in 2005, "A Broke Down Melody" is being re-released this month in theaters. The surf doc also gets a DVD release on Tuesday.
The documentary, which follows groups of surfers (including Johnson) as they chase waves around the world, marked the Hawai'i singer-songwriter's fifth filmmaking collaboration with directors (and cousins) Chris and Emmett Malloy. Johnson had co-directed other features with the duo but chose not to step behind the camera for "Broke Down."
"(For) this one, I was lucky enough just to go surfing. I didn't have to bring my camera and be on the beach and watch everybody else surf," said Johnson on Friday, during a telephone press conference.
The "Melody" soundtrack also features tunes by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Norwegian mood rockers Kings of Convenience, The Beta Band, tango legend Astor Piazolla and others. It is being released on Johnson's own Brushfire Records label.
Emmett Malloy, who is also Johnson's manager, said word of the soundtrack project drew many song submission offers. But deciding to put together a soundtrack more than a year after the film was originally released meant "We had a chance to have some songs that were more inspired by the film and made for the soundtrack by Jack," said Malloy, also during the press conference.
"Home," a gently wistful surf-folk ballad that is signature Johnson, is the only new solo track by the singer on "Melody." "Let It Be Sung" — already for sale on iTunes — features Johnson and fellow singer/songwriters Matt Costa and Zach Gill. The soundtrack also features an acoustic recording of "Breakdown," recorded prior to the version that appeared on Johnson's 2-million-selling 2005 disc "In Between Dreams."
One of the disc's best tracks is Vedder's reflective and spare ballad "Goodbye." The Pearl Jam vocalist wrote the song, added some beautifully roughhewn vocals and low-key 'ukulele strumming to it and turned it in as is.
"(It) was something that he had given to Jack and (surfer) Rob Machado (who also appears in the film) a long time ago," said Malloy. "It was something that we all felt pretty privileged to have."
