Turkey Trot set for Thanksgiving day

 •  Time to get in final long run before race

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Marathon Clinic will put on its 32nd Annual Turkey Trot starting at 7:30 a.m.

The Thanksgiving Day race does not reward the fastest finishers, but rather those who come the closest to predicting their own finish time for the 10-mile race.

Entry fee is $3 and no watches or headphones are allowed.

Registration is at the Kapi'olani Park Bandstand starting at 6:30 a.m., and the race begins at "7:30-ish," according to race coordinator Alan Sunio.

"We don't start the race at an accurate time, to further assure that the runners have a bigger challenge keeping track of the time," Sunio said. "The object of the run is to be aware of your speed, and — for the marathoners in the group —fine tune your pace for the marathon. We reward accuracy more than speed in this race."

Each runner is given a popsicle stick upon registration, where they write their predicted finish time to the second. At the finish, the sticks are collected and evaluated to determine the winners.
