TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Bruce Almighty" (2003), 7 p.m., Fox. This one starts with a clever idea: God (Morgan Freeman) temporarily turns his duties over to an ordinary chap (Jim Carrey). Carrey does fine work here, which is to say that he's in control. Jennifer Aniston is a big plus as his girlfriend. And the more we see him, we suspect that maybe Freeman really would be a fine God.

Football, 7 and 10:30 a.m., ABC. Figuring that there will be a lot of inert males home today, ABC offers a college doubleheader. It's Texas A&M at Texas at 7 a.m., then Colorado at Nebraska at 10:30 a.m. Also, CBS has Louisiana State at Arkansas at 9:30 a.m.

"Hope & Faith," 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., WE. ABC probably erred by canceling this pleasant-enough situation comedy. Now the network has big holes on Friday, while this cable channel has some fun reruns.

"The Family Man" (2000), 7 p.m., NBC. A big-city businessman (Nicolas Cage) leads a life of fast deals, fast cars and sleek women. Then, after an accident, he finds himself in an alternate life with a wife (Tea Leoni), kids and dull job. Director Brett Ratner gave this film a slick and stylish look that keeps the audience entertained.

"Shrek 2" (2004), 7 p.m., ABC. Think of this as sort of an animated "Meet the Parents." Sweet Fiona must tell her folks that she didn't choose the handsome prince; instead, she married a giant ogre.

"Close to Home," 8 p.m., CBS. A courthouse shooting misses the target but kills one lawyer and wounds another. Annabeth goes for the death sentence. She also finds some disturbing surprises about the original case.

"Numb3rs," 9 p.m., CBS. Shades of "The Manchurian Candidate": Someone may be taking the former subjects of a behavior-conditioning program and using them as killers.

"Bono and the Edge: Off the Record," 9 p.m., HBO. This is an early look at what will be a series from Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. Here, he interviews the U2 guys.
