Hilo men's basketball team loses, 83-70

Trey Clarkson scored 21 points and three teammates also scored in double figures as Western New Mexico beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 83-70, last night in the Hilo Shootout at Hilo civic.
Jason Jackson scored 15, DJ Nicholas added 14 and Devin Stewart 11 for Western New Mexico (3-0), which shot 32 of 60 (53.3 percent) from the field.
Rashad Bilal scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Hilo (1-2). Justin Dobson, Michael Martin and Samuel Wilhoite scored 11 apiece, and Vince Alvarado added 10.

RELL SUNN'S MENEHUNE CONTEST STARTS TODAY
Rell Sunn's Menehune Contest at Makaha will be held today through Sunday.
The contest started out as a birthday party for daughter Jan Sunn-Carreira when she was 5. It has become one of the largest surf contests for kids in Hawai'i, according to a press release.
Sunn died of cancer Jan. 2, 1998. Her daughter has kept the contest going in her mother's memory.
Former contest winners include Rusty Keaulana and Sunny Garcia.

UH'S FRASH ON WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST
Hawai'i third baseman Justin Frash is one of 148 players named to the 2007 Brooks Wallace Award watch list, the College Baseball Foundation announced.
Frash, a senior, led the team with a .360 batting average last season and was second with 56 RBIs. His .479 on-base percentage was third-highest on the team.
Also named to the watch list was former Rainbows infielder Joe Spiers, who transferred to San Diego State after last season.
He batted .250 and was tied for the team lead with 15 stolen bases for the Rainbows. Spiers is a junior.
