A Waikiki sand replenishment project is expected to restart tomorrow after a month-long delay.

The project to replenish sand on Waikiki beaches was stalled because of high waves, which are expected to subside this week. Tomorrow, a local dredging company will anchor a hydraulic dredge barge about 2,000 feet off Waikiki Beach. Sand will be pumped to a staging area at Kuhio Beach through an 8-inch-wide pipeline. The staging area will remain closed to the public for the duration of the project.

Once the sand is dry, crews will move it at night to the 'Ewa Basin and the beach fronting the Duke Kahanamoku statue. The beaches will be temporarily closed during the work.

"Waikiki is important to both our residents and visitors," said Peter Young, state Department of Land and Natural Resources chairman, in a news release.

"We need to take care of this world-famous beach, and replenish areas of sand that erosion over time has removed."
