A former youth soccer coach accused in the sexual assault of six boys gave Honolulu police investigators a statement in which he "admitted to touching" two of the boys "with his hand and stated he was 'teaching' them how to masturbate," according to a court document.
The document, released yesterday, states Frederick N. Rames waived his constitutional right to remain silent and to have an attorney present, and made the statement voluntarily to police after he was arrested Sept. 21.
The arrest was on suspicion of sexually assaulting two boys, ages 7 and 12. The younger boy played on a soccer team coached by Rames and the older boy was a foster child in Rames' care. Rames was charged Sept. 23 in connection with the allegations and released on $150,000 bail.
His attorney, William Harrison, did not return two telephone messages seeking comment yesterday. A third attempt to reach him by phone was unsuccessful last night.
Honolulu police Lt. Jeff Richards, who oversees the sex-crimes detail, would not comment on the case, citing an ongoing criminal investigation.
Rames, 65, of Holua Way in Wahiawa, was arrested again Thursday in connection with additional allegations that he sexually assaulted four other boys.
The new charges involve boys ages 7 to 12 who were sexually assaulted beginning on July 24, 2002, police said. Two of the boys were in Rames' foster care and two played on a soccer team coached by Rames, police said.
He was charged yesterday with three counts of first-degree sexual assault, 14 counts of third-degree sexual assault, and four counts of witness tampering. Rames was in custody last night in lieu of $1 million bail, police said.
The witness tampering counts result from reports by four of the alleged victims that they had been contacted by Rames after his Sept. 21 arrest, and told them by phone "to lie to the police and to tell the police that he (Rames) never touched them," according to the court document released yesterday.
Three of his neighbors would not comment when contacted yesterday at their homes. No one answered the door at his home or telephone calls for comment.
A conviction for third-degree sex assault carries a maximum five years in prison, while the more serious first-degree sexual assault carries a maximum 20 years in prison.
The initial charges against Rames alleged third-degree sexual assault of the two boys.
The court document states all four of the boys Rames is charged with molesting in his most recent arrest told police they knew him as "Coach Fred."
Two of the boys told police Rames touched their genitals.
Another boy told investigators on Sept. 30 that Rames touched "his genitals on more than one occasion," according to the court document, beginning when the boy was in first grade and continuing until the boy entered fifth grade.
The boy also told police that twice when he was 9 years old, Rames had him engage in sexual contact that was beyond touching.
A fourth boy told police Rames repeatedly touched his genitals and buttocks along with more direct sexual contact, according to court documents.
The boys picked Rames' photo out of a lineup and told police he was the one who sexually assaulted them and told them to lie.
