A week after leading Saint Louis past then-No. 1 Punahou, junior quarterback Micah Mamiya again proved his worth last night.
Mamiya completed 15 of 20 passes for 159 yards and rushed for two touchdowns to lift the top-ranked Crusaders past Pac-Five, 41-20, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game last night at Aloha Stadium.
"He's definitely a play maker," said Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan, whose team remained unbeaten (6-0 overall, 3-0 in the ILH). Pac-Five is 2-4, 0-3.
The win sets up a rematch with No. 2 Punahou next Saturday.
"Hopefully, it will be just like last week," Mamiya said. "We just have to hold them down in the second half."
Saint Louis took a 31-0 lead in that game before Punahou rallied before falling, 38-35.
Last night, the Wolfpack struck first, capitalizing on a Crusader fumble that was recovered by Jordan Minashima. With third-and-goal from the 1-yard line, quarterback Bryson Beirne sneaked in with 5:41 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. The extra-point attempted was blocked.
Saint Louis used a balanced attack to march 78 yards on its next drive, capped by Mamiya's first score, a four-yard scamper. Kenton Chun kicked the extra-point to put the Crusaders ahead for good, 7-6.
On the ensuing possession, Pac-Five drove to the Saint Louis 33, but gave the ball up on downs.
After the teams traded interceptions, Keani Nishigaya capped a 10-play, 62-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge with 3:59 left in the first half to give Saint Louis a 14-6 lead.
Saint Louis' defense then turned up the heat. Beirne was sacked on first down by Solomona Aigamaua for a 5-yard loss and sacked again on third down by Scott Smith for a 3-yard loss. The Wolfpack punted, but an inadvertent whistle forced a replay. Saint Louis brought eight players on the replay. Defensive back Manoa Latu blocked the ball, which Aigamaua fell on in the end zone, giving Saint Louis a 21-6 lead at halftime.
