MILILANI After losing their first two conference games, Mililani's Trojans turned to their horses Jordan Torres and Isaiah Lawelawe last night to beat Kapolei, 34-6, in front a crowd of 1,600.
Mililani (3-2, 1-2) picked up its first win in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Red West Division. Kapolei (1-3, 1-1) suffered its first conference loss.
Torres and Lawelawe teamed for 254 yards rushing and four scores as the Trojans finished with 340 yards of offense295 on the ground.
"We saw a lot of open areas," Torres said in scouting the Hurricanes. "Our O-Line was blowing up holes."
The senior did not start due to a bruised rib, but made his presence felt early. On his first run, he took a handoff, cut to the outside and gained 37 yards. He finished with 124 yards on 15 carries.
"Torres is probably one of the best athletes we have on the team," Mililani head coach James Millwood said. Torres and Lawelawe went both ways, each playing safety on defense.
After losing to Wai'anae and Leilehua, Mililani was in an unfamiliar situation in last place in the division. "Thinking of going 0-3, I'm not even used to that," Millwood said. "We're using the two losses to our advantage. We had our problems early, but this win will get the momentum going."
Things didn't start well for Kapolei. On its opening drive, Hurricanes' quarterback Aaron Santiago was intercepted by Lyle Castanares, which led to the Trojans' first score, a Lawelawe 1-yard run.
Mililani later scored on an eight-play, 78-yard drive that was capped by Torres' 2-yard plunge.
Just before halftime, Lawelawe found the end zone again, this time from 5 yards to put Mililani up, 21-0. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound senior scored on his very next run the first play of the second half on a 54-yard run.
Soon after, however, Lawelawe left the game with a leg injury. "I'll be out one to two weeks," he said. "They think it's a sprained MCL, nothing major."
Lawelawe finished with 129 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries.
Santiago, an all-purpose player, left the game early in the third quarter, also with a leg injury.
"It looked like high on his ankle, but we have to wait for an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)," said Kapolei head coach Darren Hernandez.
The Hurricanes were limited to 189 yards of offense. "They controlled the edges (of the line of scrimmage) and we were unable to run the triple option," Hernandez said of the Trojans' defense, which used five defenders on the line.
