Prolific Peters propels BYU-Hawai'i past UH-Hilo

Michelle "Tuli" Peters amassed 26 kills and 31 digs as No. 10 Brigham Young-Hawai'i rallied for a 27-30, 30-28, 30-24, 30-20 Pacific West Conference women's volleyball victory over host Hawai'i-Hilo last night.
Noelle Filimoeatu added 18 kills, Faylynn Merrick contributed 11 kills, Roseanne Vea had 16 digs and LeeAnn Mapu dished out 53 assists as the Seasiders improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the PacWest.
Taina Savage led the Vulcans (3-9, 1-2) with 19 kills and 23 digs. Desarri Olevao added 14 kills and 13 digs.
SURFING
IRONS FALLS IN FOURTH ROUND AT CALIFORNIA
Kaua'i's Andy Irons was eliminated in the fourth round of the Boost Mobile Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.
The final day of the four-day competition was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at Lower Trestles off San Clemente, Calif.
Australia's Bede Durbidge defeated Irons, 13.06-10.7. Irons needed a score of 5.79 in the closing seconds to advance, but his final wave received a score of 3.43.
Durbidge went on to defeat defending world champion Kelly Slater of Florida in the final to win the $30,000 first prize.
Slater increased his lead atop the 2006 World Championship Tour by finishing second yesterday.
Through seven of 11 events, Slater has 6,141 points. Australia's Taj Burrow is No. 2 with 5,558, and Irons is No. 3 with 4,965.
Among other Hawai'i surfers, Bruce Irons is No. 18, Fred Patacchia Jr. is No. 24, Pancho Sullivan is No. 25, and Roy Powers is No. 40.
The next contest is the Quiksilver Pro France, Sept. 22-Oct. 1 at Hossegor, France.

WAILEA ACCEPTING ENTRIES TO CHALLENGER
Wailea Tennis Club is accepting entries for the Wailea Men's Challenger pre-qualifying tournament, Oct. 7 and 8.
The winner of pre-qualifying will get a wildcard entry into the main draw of the Wailea Men's Challenger, Nov. 27 to Dec. 3. The $50,000 tournament is part of the USTA Pro Circuit. The runner-up gets a wildcard entry into the Challenger's qualifier.
The pre-qualifier is for men's singles players ranked 5.0 or higher. All participants must have a current USTA ID number. Entry fee of $75 per tournament includes free spectator admission to the main event.
Entry deadline is Oct. 2. The draw is limited to 32. For more information and to obtain an entry form, call the Wailea Tennis Club (808) 879-1958 on Maui.

BYU-HAWAI'I ROLLS PAST HAWAI'I PACIFIC, 2-0
Heidi Bushman and Emily Mearns scored second-half goals as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 2-0, yesterday in a women's match in La'ie.
The Seasiders (2-1) outshot the Sea Warriors (0-2) 24-4.
Bushman got the Seasiders on the board in the 59th minute after stealing the ball from the Sea Warrior defense directly in front of the Hawai'i Pacific goal.
Mearns scored in the same fashion two minutes later for the final margin.
LATE GOALS LIFE USF OVER CORNELL AT WAIPI'O
San Francisco scored two goals in the final 11 minutes to rally past Cornell, 2-1, last night in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Shootout at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Fiona Sullivan knocked in a rebound shot to tie the score in the 79th minute, and Lauren Tweet scored on a header from 5 yards in the 88th minute for the Dons (3-4), who play host Hawai'i (5-2-1) for the tournament championship today at 5 p.m.

UH WOMEN RUN AWAY WITH BIG WAVE VICTORY
The University of Hawai'i women's team, led by Chantelle Laan's first-place finish, captured the Big Wave Invitational yesterday at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.
Laan won the 4-kilometer race in 15 minutes, 5 seconds. Sharlene Carillo placed third (15:41) and Tava Tedesco fourth (15:43) as the Rainbow Wahine amassed a low-best 46 points.
"Chantelle was outstanding today," UH head coach Carmyn James said. "She led the race, more or less, from start to finish. I was most impressed with not just her running, but the leadership skills she has showed amongst her team."
Houston (58 points) finished second, followed by Occidental (68), Hawai'i-Hilo (78), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (91) and Chaminade (146).
Houston captured the men's team title with Calum Neff winning the 5-kilometer race in 15:31, just ahead of HPU's Todd Iacovelli (15:35).
BYUH (67) finished second, followed by Occidental (70), Hilo (90) and HPU (90), and Chaminade (195).
