This may help get out vote

By Ferd Lewis

The experts tell us that only about 60 percent of registered voters in Hawai'i are expected to find their way into voting booths for Saturday's primary election.

Sad, especially for a primary that features the Daniel Akaka-Ed Case U.S. Senate showdown.

To remedy the situation, maybe what this ballot needs is its own sports section. A fan's referendum on the sports issues of the day as it were.

With that in mind, here are a few topics that you won't see on the ballot Saturday, but probably should.

PAY-PER-VIEW INITIATIVE

Shall UH and its cable partners be prohibited from charging pay-per-view pricing for any future Warrior/Rainbow Wahine road games?

NATE ILAOA INITIATIVE

Should UH be mandated to put the ball in the hands of running back Nate Ilaoa a minimum of 20 times per game this season?

WAC SCHEDULING INITIATIVE

In future years shall the Western Athletic Conference be prohibited from scheduling UH to play road football games at both Boise State and Fresno State in the same season?

FILL-THE-STANDS INITIATIVE

If, by a Thursday night deadline, UH is not able to sell at least 30,000 tickets for a home football game, shall students receive free admission to the game?

TAILGATING INITIATIVE

Shall the swap meet be excluded from Aloha Stadium and parking gates be opened earlier for tailgating on dates when UH football is played?

PROPOSITION A

Following the Oklahoma-Oregon game — not to mention Hawai'i's own misadventure at USC in 2003 — shall Pac-10 refs be prohibited from working UH football games?

PROPOSITION B

Shall Kaiser, HMSA, Summerlin and other health insurers offer a special Rainbow Wahine Group Plan discount for all sports teams with multiple injuries?

PROPOSITION C

Should the nature of injuries to UH athletes who have waived privacy restrictions be disclosed?

PROPOSITION D

Should the football team bus be required to wait for all coaches before departing the site of the game?
