Perfect ride helps boost Bruce Irons

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons scored a perfect 10 in his first-round victory in the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.
The first round was completed in 4- to 6-foot waves at Hossegor, France.
Irons received a perfect 10 for a long barrel ride, and also had a 9.57 for a two-wave total of 19.57.
His older brother Andy Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore also won first-round heats yesterday.
As first-round winners, they will receive byes in the second round.
Hawai'i surfers Roy Powers and Pancho Sullivan did not win yesterday and will have to surf in the second round, where eliminations begin.
The Quiksilver Pro France is the eighth of 11 stops on the 2006 World Championship tour.

HAWAI'I-HILO STOPS GRAND CANYON IN 4
Taina Savage had 25 kills to lift Hawai'i-Hilo to a 32-30, 30-14, 28-30, 30-23 victory over Grand Canyon University in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match last night at UHH Gymnasium in Hilo.
UH-Hilo is 5-9, Grand Canyon 7-8.
Olveao Desarri had 14 kills and Morgan Bonney 12 for the Vulcans. Dana Edington had a team-high 12 kills for Grand Canyon.
Savage added five aces for UH-Hilo.
BYUH SWEEPS PAST NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR
Michelle Peters had 16 kills and Noelle Filimoeatu added 13 to help Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-16, 30-16, 30-26 Pacific West Conference women's volleyball sweep of Notre Dame De Namur at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Brigham Young-Hawai'i is 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the PacWest. Notre Dame De Namur is 7-11 and 0-5.
Kaala Lo had six aces for the Seasiders.
BYUH hit .273, while NDNU hit .066.

DIGNAM BOOSTS HPU IN SHUTOUT OF CHAMINADE
Senior Lauren Dignam scored two goals and assisted on another as the Hawai'i Pacific women's soccer team defeated visiting Chaminade, 5-0, yesterday for the inaugural program's first victory.
Jamie Hirai and Rachele Bakic also scored for the Sea Warriors (1-2). Goalkeeper Michelle Halloran had 19 saves for the Silverswords (0-2), who were outshot 46-3.
Dignam, an Iolani School and University of Washington alum, scored in the 28th minute off a pass from Malia Kane and in the 48th minute off a feed from Nikki Arevalo. She also assisted on Bakic's goal.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE BEATS DETROIT IN OT
Tessa Binkley's goal 7 1/2 minutes into overtime lifted Cal State Northridge to a 2-1 victory over Detroit last night in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invitational at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Mary Ortega scored in the seventh minute for Northridge (5-4), which will play host Hawai'i (6-2-2) for the tournament championship tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Mary Parker scored for Detroit (2-6) last night.
CROSS COUNTRY
HOST BYUH, HAWAI'I PREVAIL IN INVITATIONAL
The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's cross country team placed all 10 of its runners in the top 15 yesterday to capture the BYUH Invitational.
The Seasiders — led by Jake Puzey's third-place finish of 26 minutes, 38 seconds in the 8-kilometer race — scored a low-best 27 points, followed by Hawai'i Pacific (38) and Chaminade (73).
HPU's Todd Iacovelli won in 25:48.
In the women's division, Chantelle Laan won the 5K race in a personal-best 18:37 to lead the University of Hawai'i to victory.
The Rainbow Wahine scored a low-best 31 points, followed by BYUH (44), HPU (69) and Chaminade (85).
GOLF
HILO FINISHES SECOND IN WASHINGTON TOURNEY
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo's men's team, led by Logan Goulding's runner-up finish, placed second in the St. Martin's Invitational yesterday at Tumwater, Wash.
Grand Canyon shot 881 to edge Hilo by two strokes. Brigham Young-Hawai'i placed 10th in the 10-team field with 966.
Goulding shot 75—218 to finish two strokes behind medalist Donald Zaruba III of Grand Canyon.
UH MEN PLACE 14TH IN TUCKER TOURNAMENT
The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished 14th in the 21-team William H. Tucker Intercollegiate tournament yesterday at Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rainbow Warriors shot 42-over 906. Host New Mexico won with 10-over 874.
UH's Pierre-Henri Soero tied for 14th after shooting a 76 yesterday for a 4-over 220 total. New Mexico's Charlie Beljan won with 6-under 210.
