Kalani rolls past Kahuku, 68-51

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Discipline and composure allowed Kalani to turn a close game with Kahuku last night into a rout.

Megan Kamehiro scored 23 points and Courtney Gaddis overcame foul trouble to add 18 points and seven blocks as the host Falcons rallied to beat the Red Raiders, 68-51, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Eastern Division game.

The Falcons trailed 41-36 midway through the third quarter, but stingy defense, solid ball-handling and accurate free-throw shooting allowed them to pull away.

"These kids are fighters," Kalani coach Darold Imanaka said. "They're not going to ever quit. That's the joy of coaching these girls."

Kalani (4-1) ended the third quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 48-45 advantage. Kamehiro scored five points during the surge.

"It's (Kalani's) all-around composure," Kahuku coach Peni Latu said. "I didn't want to change anything because we had the momentum. I wanted to keep the game flowing the way it was, but our girls, the pressure got to them."

In the fourth quarter, Kalani committed zero turnovers and converted 13 of 16 free-throw attempts. The Falcons, who effectively ran a semi-stall offense with 3:30 remaining, ended the game on a 12-0 run.

"We try to instill discipline. It's a life skill we try to teach them. You don't have discipline in life, you won't do anything right or do well," Imanaka said.

Gaddis picked up her third foul with 2:41 left before halftime, and was accessed her fourth with 4:11 remaining in the third.

She re-entered at the start of the fourth and scored six consecutive Falcons' points over a one-minute span as Kalani took a 55-47 lead with 4:12 remaining.

Kamehiro scored 22 points over the first three quarters.

"The coaches talked to me before the game that I have to step up and take the lead," Kamehiro said.

The Falcons bounced back from a one-point loss to first-place Roosevelt on Wednesday.

"After the Roosevelt loss, we were really frustrated," Gaddis said. "At practice we just worked harder and we figured even though we lost we were going to come back and not fall."

Kahuku dropped to 3-2.
