Accident fatality was 'Ele'ele man

A 39-year-old Kaua'i man who died at 9:30 Saturday night when an all-terrain vehicle he was loading onto a pickup truck overturned and landed on him in the driveway of his 'Ele'ele residence has been identified as Jaime Kaluna.

Kaluna died at Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital.


SPEED BLAMED IN SATURDAY CRASH

The victim in a fiery, one-vehicle fatal crash Saturday night along Farrington Highway near Palehua Road was a 31-year-old Waipahu man, according to police traffic investigators.

The victim's name had not been released.

Police said "speed was a factor" in the accident, which occurred at 10:14 p.m.

The driver, operating a 2004 black Nissan Armada, passed another vehicle at a "high rate of speed," left the road and crashed into an electrical utility pole.

The vehicle burst into flames.

It was the 27th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 25 at this time last year, police said.


BODY FOUND IN OCEAN OFF WAIKIKI

The body of a man was discovered by a surfer at 7 a.m. yesterday and retrieved by the Honolulu Fire Department in waters off the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

The body is of an Asian man but the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has been unable to determine his identity.

An autopsy will be performed today.


SUSPECT CHARGED IN SEXUAL ASSAULTS

Prosecutors charged a 34-year-old man yesterday with 29 counts of felony sexual assault.

William F.D. Rittmeiser II is accused of 17 counts of first-degree sex assault and 12 counts of third-degree sex assault in abusing a 19-year-old woman over a "prolonged period of time" in Waipahu, according to police. Bail is $800,000.
