UH ranked No. 10 in volleyball

The University of Hawai'i volleyball team has ascended to No. 10 in this week's CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll.

An eight-game winning streak improved the Warriors to 11-13 overall and 9-11 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

With two regular-season matches remaining, the Warriors are tied for seventh in the MPSF. The top eight teams qualify for the MPSF playoffs.


SURFING

THREE FROM HAWAI'I ADVANCE IN AUSTRALIA

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. advanced to the fourth round of the Rip Curl Pro men's contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at Johanna Beach, Australia.

Andy Irons, who is seeded No. 2 in the contest, defeated Brazil's Rodrigo Dornelles, 13.0-12.33. Younger brother Bruce Irons defeated South Africa's Ricky Basnett, 14.0-10.5.

Patacchia received a score of 8.5 (out of 10) in the final minute to defeat Australian Phil MacDonald, 14.17-13.73.

World champion and No. 1 seed Kelly Slater of Florida also advanced yesterday.

The contest is the second of 10 events on the 2007 World Championship Tour.


SOFTBALL

NO. 16 BIOLA SWEEPS BYUH IN TWINBILL

Sarah Jensen drove in two runs and Emily Gray allowed one run in six innings as No. 16 Biola (Calif.) beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 6-2, yesterday to complete a non-conference doubleheader women's softball sweep at La'ie.

Agesha Lightsy hit a solo home run, and Crystal De La Cruz batted 3 for 3 for BYUH, which fell to 15-24 overall.

In the first game, Katie Gustaveson tossed a six-hitter, and Krista Johnson had three RBIs as Biola won, 3-1.

The Lady Eagles improved to 24-8.
