A man stabbed in the back at Thomas Square last night was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

Police said the victim and another man were walking in the park about 9 p.m. when they were attacked by four other men, who fled across South King Street toward McKinley High School.

The stabbing victim was attended to by Emergency Medical Services personnel and firefighters from the Makiki station before being taken to the hospital. His injury was not believed to be life-threatening.

Another man suffered a cut to his arm. He told police he and the stabbing victim were attacked by the group of men while walking on the diamondhead/mauka side of the park near the restroom.

STATE CEREMONY TO HONOR WAR DEAD

The state on Monday will recognize members of the military with Hawai'i ties who were killed in action over the past year.

Forty-two families from the state and the Mainland are expected to attend the joint legislative session to receive the Hawai'i Medal of Honor on behalf of fallen troops.

The medal was created to recognize the heroism of Hawai'i's armed forces, and honors those killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The total number of service members eligible to receive the medal this year is 68, a Senate spokesman said. Last year's presentation of the Hawai'i Medal of Honor was the first of its kind in the nation.

The 10 a.m. ceremony in the Senate chamber is open to the public, but seating is limited.

SORORITY'S ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT

The eighth annual scholarship fundraiser for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Lambda Chi Omega Chapter, will be held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Resort in Waikiki.

Alpha Kappa Alpha, America's first Greek-letter organization established by African American college women, has supported communities in Hawai'i for the past 29 years. Through the upcoming Emerald Ball, the organization is able to support youth by providing scholarships. Last year the group gave scholarships to six O'ahu high school seniors.

The theme of this year's ball is "Elegance and Splendor in Paradise," highlighting the achievements of local youth embarking on a college career. Tickets for dinner and dancing are $70, and available by contacting Sandi Sumbry at 235-5464.
