Finishing kicks lift UH track standouts

University of Hawai'i's Annett Wichmann and Mallory Gilbert set personal bests in heptathlon competitions yesterday at Azusa, Calif.
Wichmann, a junior from Jena, Germany, also set a school record in scoring an NCAA provisional 5,413 points to finish fourth at the Mt. Sac meet. She set the previous school record of 5,347 points when she won the Western Athletic Conference title last year.
Wichmann set heptathlon personal bests with 18 feet, one-half inch in the long jump and 140-3 in the javelin yesterday, and her Day 2 point total of 2,213 also was a personal best.
Gilbert, a senior from Clovis, Calif., scored 4,582 points at the California Invitational, eclipsing her personal best by more than 200 points and finishing 10th.
Gilbert posted heptathlon personal bests in the long jump (16-6 1/2) and 800-meter run (2:35.81), and her Day 2 point total of 1,806 also was a personal best.
BASEBALL
HPU SWEPT
Josiah Ziegler scattered seven hits and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings of relief, and Grand Canyon scored twice in the bottom of the 11th to beat Hawai'i Pacific, 8-7, and complete a doubleheader sweep at Phoenix, Ariz.
The Antelopes (22-15) scored on a sacrifice fly and a passed ball to beat the Sea Warriors (19-20), who had taken a 7-6 lead in the top of the 11th on Mark Veneri's RBI single.
Johnny Gentry led HPU's 19-hit attack with four hits and three RBIs. Veneri, who also pitched 6 2/3 strong innings of relief, and Colton Silva each had three hits.
In the first game, Jacob Hanna and Brad Western each had three hits and two RBIs in Grand Canyon's 11-3 victory.
Tripper Chung batted 3 for 4 for HPU.
WATER POLO
UH PREVAILS, 15-10
Angela Turnbull scored a career-high six goals and Kelly Mason added five as the fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team defeated No. 19 Cal State Northridge, 15-10, yesterday at Matador Pool in Northridge, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine improved to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in a physical match that resulted in 30 ejections — 18 on Hawai'i. Four Rainbows and one Matador accumulated three ejections, resulting in their removal from the match.
Allison Brookes scored five goals for Northridge (12-16, 0-9).
Kelly Mason, Kristy Bagnall and Turnbull scored in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the third quarter as Hawai'i pulled away from a 5-5 halftime tie.
TENNIS
HPU, HILO WIN
Twentieth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific and 34th-ranked Hawai'i-Hilo swept to victories yesterday in the opening round of the Pacific West Conference women's tournament at the Brigham Young-Hawai'i courts.
The Sea Warriors handily won all three doubles matches, then got quick wins at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles to close out Grand Canyon, 6-0.
The Vulcans won the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default en route to a 6-0 victory over Chaminade.
HPU plays Hilo, and Chaminade meets top-ranked BYUH in today's matches.
