The 'Iolani School girls basketball team rebounded from its stunning loss at Kamehameha Tuesday by routing visiting Maryknoll, 61-31, last night.

Next up for the Raiders is a 6 o'clock rematch tonight at two-time defending state champion Punahou. 'Iolani is 5-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu; Punahou, which has won the past four ILH titles, is 3-2.

The Raiders defeated the Buffanblu, 37-27, last Tuesday.

With only five teams in ILH Division I, the league is playing a three-round regular season schedule for the first time.

Maryknoll is 0-6, but the Spartans feature senior Nicole Fu, arguably the best guard in the league and one of the best in the state. The Raiders limited Fu to a season-low six points last night by limiting her touches in the halfcourt set.

After 'Iolani forward Jamie Smith scored a layup 17 seconds into the game, Maryknoll tried to run a deliberate perimeter passing game in an effort to slow things down and run time off the clock. It worked for about two minutes, but after the Spartans missed a shot Smith converted a three-point play, and Alana Matayoshi scored on a fast break layup following a steal to put the Raiders up, 7-0, with 5:05 remaining.

Maryknoll then had to scrap its slowdown tactic, and things did not get any better as 'Iolani jumped to a 17-4 lead by the end of the period.

"We tried to run that (slowdown) offense, but we couldn't make good passes in the open court," Spartans coach Bob Samson said. "Passing is a skill, and some of our younger players are still learning."

The Raiders made things tough by extending their 1-2-2 matchup zone, pressuring point guard Fu into passing the ball and then denying her from getting it back.

"We just tried to contain (Fu)," 'Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "Once she gave up the ball, we tried to not let her get it again."

The 5-foot-4 Fu, who earned ILH All-Star first-team honors last season, scored all four of Maryknoll's points in the first quarter — on two free throws and a spectacular running banker after a nifty crossover move down the right side of the lane.

But she was shut out in the second and third periods as the Raiders stretched the lead to 35-13 by halftime and 42-15 entering the fourth.

Fu entered the night averaging 16 points per game, including a 19-point effort against Punahou last week and 22 points against Mid-Pacific Tuesday. Last season, she scored a career-high 44 points in a double-overtime victory over Sacred Hearts. She later scored 33 points in a rematch against the Lancers.

She will play for Concordia (Calif.) University next season.

"As far as guards, she's the premier talent (in the ILH)," Samson said. "But tonight was not a good night."

Smith led all scorers with 15 points — including 10 in the first quarter — and Matayoshi added 10 points.

'Iolani was coming off a frustrating 55-42 loss at Kamehameha.

"The girls came back strong at practice (on Wednesday)," Takara said. "They key for us was to get back into the game mentally."
