Woman killed in crosswalk named

The Honolulu medical examiner's office yesterday identified the pedestrian who died yesterday as Jae Hyeong Sim, 74.
Sim died at The Queen's Medical Center at 9:51 p.m. after being struck by a 2001 Honda Accord turning left from Kuakini Street onto 'Alaneo Street at 5:46 p.m. Sunday. Sim was in a crosswalk, but police are trying to determine whether she was crossing with or against the pedestrian crossing light.
The motorist, a 77-year-old woman, was not injured.
TRAIL TO KALALAU VALLEY REOPENED
LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has reopened the trail to Kalalau Valley after maintenance was conducted on a section at Pohakuao.
The department's Division of State Parks had received reports that the section was unsafe and closed it pending a check and maintenance. Parks maintenance personnel also cleaned up camping areas at Hanakoa and Kalalau valleys.
Day-use permits are required on the Kalalau Trail beyond Hanakapi'ai Valley. For more information, see www.state .hi.us/dlnr/dsp.

OFF-DUTY OFFICER CONFRONTS THIEVES
An off-duty police officer fired a shot yesterday at two men who allegedly drove toward him as they tried to drive off in his son's car in 'Aiea, police said.
No one was injured and police captured one of the alleged auto thieves in the 12:45 a.m. incident at an 'Aiea residence.
The off-duty officer, a 25-year HPD veteran, was awakened by noise outside his bedroom window and saw two men breaking into his son's car. The officer confronted the two suspects and identified himself as a police officer.
The officer fired a shot at the windshield when the men revved the engine of the vehicle and drove at him, police said.
The passenger in the car, an 18-year-old man, was captured but the driver ran away.
The suspect was booked on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, auto theft, breaking into a car and possession of a switchblade knife.
RAW SEWAGE SPILLS INTO PEARL HARBOR
About 500 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Pearl Harbor yesterday following a sewer main break, the state Department of Health Clean Water Branch said.
The department said an 18-foot force main broke at the Merry Point Lift Station.
The department advised contractors and military dive operations to stay out of the area until repairs are completed and bacteria levels return to normal.
TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO THEFT CHARGES
A 30-year-old Waikiki man was charged Friday with 10 counts related to identity and credit card theft as well as being in possession of a stolen moped.
The charges against Michael Lance Weigle of Cleghorn Street came out of a traffic violation stop Thursday at 4:50 a.m. on Kapi'olani Boulevard and Wiliwili Street. After pulling Weigle over, police learned that the moped he was operating was stolen.
Weigle also allegedly had a shopping bag with identification and bank-issued credit cards that do not belong to him.
His bail was set at $11,000.
