WAIPI'O — Punahou sophomore Kristin Lim added another Interscholastic League of Honolulu tennis singles championship to her family's impressive collection yesterday, rallying past Kamehameha senior Brooke Doane, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Lim joins older brothers Robbie (2003 and 2004) and Mikey (2005) as ILH singles champs from Punahou.

"It feels good," said Kristin, whose brothers are attending college on the Mainland. "(Robbie and Mikey) called me this week and said, 'Good luck.' I want to beat them (and win three titles)."

She had to work hard to earn her first crown yesterday against Doane, the defending ILH runner-up.

Lim trailed 4-3 in the third set but managed to hold serve and then broke Doane to go up, 5-4. Doane forced deuce in the final game, but Lim gained advantage on a perfectly placed lob, and then got Doane to hit a drop shot into the net for the victory.

"I thought that was the turning point," Doane said of losing the 4-3 lead. "I started to make errors, and she was getting the best (points). She played an all-out game and she went for every shot."

Lim said Doane's style made things difficult in the first game.

"I was playing tentative and she was playing good," Lim said. "I was thinking too much instead of just playing. She chips a lot and I'm not used to that low shot. She would serve and come to the net; all the other girls usually just play baseline."

Lim came back to win the second set despite not holding serve until the final game.

Lim's struggled with her service game again in the third set, but held when she needed to in the crucial eighth game.

"I thought, 'This is huge, this is the match right here,'" Lim said.

Punahou senior Skyler Tateishi repeated as boys singles champ in much less dramatic fashion, defeating teammate Reid Kiyabu, 6-1, 6-2.

Last year, Tateishi had upset Mikey Lim in the final, but there was no such turning of the tables this time.

"There was pressure, but I tried not to think about it," Tateishi said. "I just tried to play my game."

Kiyabu, the No. 6 seed, said Tateishi's all-around game showed no weaknesses.

"I tried really hard, but he had an answer for everything," Kiyabu said.

In the boys doubles final, Punahou's Alex Ching and Erik Shoji defeated teammates Hiroshi Hikida and Brad Takei, 6-4, 6-4. In the girls doubles final, Punahou's Ashley Ohira and Nicole Nakaoka defeated 'Iolani's Nikki Castel and Jaime Young, 6-2, 6-2.

THIRD-PLACE RESULTS

Boys doubles — Marcus Pearman and Kyle Shiroma ('Iolani) def. Gene Kurosawa and Robby Kelley (Punahou) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; Girls doubles — Kelsey Daguio and Kelly Domingo (Sacred Hearts) def.
