'Iolani's Jamie Smith is the type of player who commands double teams in the post.
Collapse on her too late and Smith will have a field day like she did last night against visiting Punahou.
Smith, a 6-foot junior center, scored 13 of her 20 points in the second half as 'Iolani beat Punahou, 49-39, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.
"She just relaxes and lets the game come to her," 'Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "She didn't force anything. Also, it was her teammates looking for her."
Smith's nifty post moves included a couple of left-handed scoop shots. She also had 13 rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks.
"She is relentless, she's highly competitive," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "We needed highly competitive players to go on her, and for the most part we were trying really hard. Some of our defensive rotations were not what we wanted, but it was not from a lack of will."
'Iolani improved to 9-2; Punahou dropped to 6-4. Kamehameha, which was idle last night, is at 8-2.
The Buffanblu started strong behind an aggressive full-court press and led 17-8 early in the second quarter on a baseline jumper by Melanie Feldman.
"Punahou came out with a lot of intensity like they always do," Takara said. "They kind of got us off our game and once we settled down we were OK."
'Iolani started the fourth quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 44-37 advantage with five minutes remaining. Smith had four points during the spurt, and Chanel Hirata capped it with a 3-pointer from the right wing.
"Once we got on our run and started working together it all flowed from there," Smith said.
Hirata scored nine of her 13 points in the second half, including two 3-pointers.
"She's one of our best 3-point shooters," Takara said. "She has the green light to shoot it."
Punahou forced nine turnovers in the first quarter, but only eight over the final three.
"We were coming off the wrong player and trapping the wrong person and they just flipped it right over our heads. They're smart people," Taylor said.
Smith was effective on the press break by simply holding the ball over her head and waiting for her teammates to break open. If the Buffanblu defenders sagged off her, she was able to dribble the ball up the floor.
"I'm very tall. It's easy for me to see the whole floor and I can kick it out to whoever is open," Smith said.
'Iolani shot 15 of 37 from the field, including 3 of 10 from 3-point range.
Feldman scored nine points to lead Punahou, which shot 16 of 45 from the field and committed 23 turnovers.
"We weren't as disciplined as we needed to be," Taylor said. "We were trying to be playmakers without being disciplined at first."
