Hakala earns prestigious WAC honor

Former University of Hawaii volleyball standout Lauri Hakala was named co-winner of the Western Athletic Conference Stan Bates Award as the conference's top male scholar-athlete.
Hakala, a senior outside hitter from Finland who completed his eligibility last season, is a German and communications major with a 3.72 GPA.
He has signed a professional contract with the Lausanne Universite Club Volleyball team in Switzerland. He plans to return to UH next summer to complete his degree.
Idaho cross country and track and field athlete Melinda Ouwerkerk and San Jose State baseball player Corey Cabral were the other recipients of the award named in honor of Bates, a former WAC commissioner.
GOLF
ISLE GOLFERS BOOST WEST
Hawai'i golfers won their matches on the final day of the Canon Cup to help the West team win its third straight title yesterday.
Sacred Hearts senior Ayaka Kaneko defeated Courtney Ellenbogen, 4 and 3. Kaneko won all four of her matches at the event as the West squad defeated the East, 27-23, at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.
Former Big Island and current Arizona resident Kimberly Kim won 2 and 1 over Lindy Duncan, and Punahou senior Stephanie Kono won 7 and 5 over Isabelle Lendl. Kono and Kim were on last year's West team.
The event featured team match play on the first two days of competition and individual match play on the final day.
HAWAI'I FINISHES FOURTH
Kristina Merkle shot a final-round 3-over-par 75 to help Hawai'i place fourth out of 18 teams in the 30th Girls Junior Americas Cup at Portland, Ore.
Hawai'i, which also included Anna Jang, Britney Yada and Tamara Surtees, finished with a three-day aggregate score of 42-over 690. Southern California won with 14-over 662.
Southern California's Lee Lopez won medalist honors with 74—215. Merkle (222) was fourth, Jang (235) tied for 15th and Surtees (242) tied for 30th in the 72-player field.
MOORE EARNS BERTH
William Moore of Pacific Grove, Calif., shot a two-round total of 142 to earn the lone qualifying berth Wednesday in the U.S. Amateur Section Qualifier at Mid Pacific Country Club.
Moore edged Thomas Robertson of Pukalani, Maui, who shot 73-70—143. Finishing at 145 were Wailuku's Christopher Armanini (72-73), Honolulu's Lorens Chan (71-74), Princeville's Mark Scheibach (68-77) and Kailua's Reyn Tanaka (71-74).
The 107th U.S. Amateur Championship, the oldest USGA championship that was first played in 1895, will be held at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Aug. 20 to 26.
ZELLMER LEADS ARMY
Derek Zellmer shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the Championship flight after the opening round of the Army Invitational at the Leilehua Golf Course.
Lin Akiyama and Craig Watanabe share the A flight lead with 73s, John Mun leads B flight with 74, Stanley Tandal leads C flight with 79, and George Yamamoto leads Senior flight with 71.
YOUTH SOFTBALL
GUAVA JAM, KOLOHE WIN
Jamie Millwood pitched a shutout, batted 3 for 3 and drove in six runs as Guava Jam defeated Norcal Blue Crush, 10-0, yesterday in the ASA Softball Western A Nationals (ages 16-under) at Sunnyvale, Calif.
C.J. Garces batted 4 for 4 with two doubles for Guava Jam.
Also yesterday, Laura Abellanida and Leinna Kalua each had three hits as Kolohe ('Ewa Beach) beat Marin Blue Angels, 10-2.
KUPONO TRIUMPHS
Kayla Sakamoto pitched a five-hitter and had two hits and two RBIs as Kupono beat Konnexion (Las Vegas), 8-3, yesterday in the ASA Softball Western A Nationals (14-under) at Phoenix.
Althia Dicion added two hits and two RBIs for Kupono.
YOUTH BASEBALL
PEARL CITY PREVAILS
Pearl City overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat host Beaverton, Ore., 6-3, yesterday in the Little League Junior (ages 13-14) West Regional.
Kahana Neal and Chace Numata teamed to scatter 12 hits and hold Beaverton scoreless over the final six innings of the seven-inning game.
Pearl City (2-0) plays Utah tomorrow.
