Documentary on prison meditation

The Hawaii Association of International Buddhists and Vipassana Hawaii will screen "Changing From Inside," a documentary film on how residents of a Seattle prison are changed by mindfulness meditation (vipassana).
The free screening is 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.
There will be a discussion on mindfulness meditation following the film and refreshments will be served.

BUDDHIST 'MAGIC' AND MINDFULNESS
A Tibetan Buddhist Path seminar continues at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kailua Shambhala Meditation Center, 25 Kane'ohe Bay Drive, Suite 205.
There will be readings, first taught by Chogyam Trunga Rinpoche during the first summer session at Naropa Institute in 1974, to prepare for the talks and discussion will follow. The topic is "Magic."
Also, "Mindfulness Practice," a talk by Ernestine Enomoto, a Thich Nhat Hanh Dharma teacher, will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 26 at the center. Enomoto has been a student of Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh since the 1990s, and was given the dharma lineage name True Mindfulness of Peace. She then founded the Honolulu Mindfulness Community. There will be individual meditation instruction and open meditation at 9:15 a.m.

BIBLICAL STUDY REGISTRATION OPEN
Registration is open for Focus on the Family's The Truth Project conference and training event Sept. 28-29.
The Truth Project is a biblical worldview study, and the study session with Del Tackett will be held at the Dole Cannery Ballrooms 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 28 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29.

ORGAN CONCERT A FUNDRAISER
"From Generation to Generation," the Midsummer Night's Organ Concert, will be 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Central Union Church.
The free concert is the 18th annual benefit for the Hawaii chapter of the American Guild of Organists scholarship program, which provides money for youths to learn to play the organ. Donations will be accepted.
It features several generations of organists, including Nyle Hallman and Margaret Lloyd of Central Union Church, John McCreary and John Renke of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Katherine Crosier of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, and scholarship recipients Joey Fala and Jordan McCreary.
The special guest will be organist Frederick Swann, national president of the American Guild of Organists and former organist at the Crystal Cathedral and the Riverside Church.

CENTERING PRAYER CLASS ON AUG. 18
Central Union Church will host a morning of Centering Prayer, a silent prayer, at 9 a.m. Aug. 18 at the Women's Building, 1660 S. Beretania St.
The introductory class teaches the methods involved; a book on contemplative practices and the spiritual journey will be available.

Tickets are on sale for United Church of Christ's 51st annual benefit "takeout" lu'au on Aug. 18.
A $20 box ($6 of which is tax-deductible) can be picked up between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. that day. It is an 11-course Hawaiian meal.
