  • The Hawai'i Gateway Energy Center at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai'i Authority, on the Big Island, has been selected as one of the 2007 "10 Best Green Buildings" in the nation by the American Institute of Architects. The building was designed by Ferraro Choi Associates architects of Honolulu and opened in 2004. The unique building is easily recognizable because of its futuristic-looking solar panel array above the structure, known as a "space frame." The national competition, now in its 11th year, is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Kaua'i's Princeville Ranch Adventures' guided hike to the five-tiered Kalihi Wai Falls has been chosen as Princess Cruise Lines' 2006/2007 Tour of the Year for its Kaua'i port of call. The hike allows exclusive access across the private Princeville Ranch to mountain and ocean views of northern Kaua'i, hidden jungle streams and tropical rain forest, along with catered picnic at a secluded swimming hole. The awards are rated each year by the cruise line's passengers. Captain Zodiac of Kailua, Kona, Big Island, was named the cruise line's Tour of the Year for the port of Kona, also based on passenger ratings. The morning and afternoon raft and snorkel adventures include off-shore commentary of historic sights, sightings of dolphins and marine life, and snorkeling in the Kealakekua Bay marine sanctuary. On the return trip, Captain Zodiac hugs the rugged coastline, and explore places accessible to only Zodiacs, including natural blowholes, exposed lava tubes, and sea caves.

  • Pathology professor Yoshitsugi Hokama, of the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine, has received a national award for his research linking ciguatera poisoning to chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome. The National CFIDS Foundation awarded Hokama its 2007 Outstanding Researcher Award for his research, which was the first to discover ciguatoxin, a potent neurotoxin, in the blood of chronic fatigue syndrome patients. Hokama has secured an international blood permit so that millions of patients worldwide would have access to testing offered by the medical school.

  • DTRIC Insurance Co. Ltd., a Hawai'i-based provider of personal automobile, homeowner, renter, workers' compensation and general casualty insurance, and its direct marketing agency, Harte-Hanks, have been honored with a 2007 Philadelphia Direct Marketing Association Benjamin Franklin Award for Direct Marketing Excellence. Harte-Hanks helped DTRIC develop its own local brand identity with the iconic "Deetric" laid-back Hawai'i "surfer dude" character. The recognizable advertising campaign includes television, Web and direct mail — as well as even sign-waving events and elevator signage.

  • CHARLENE van der PYL, senior vice president and wealth adviser in Morgan Stanley's Global Wealth Management Group Honolulu office, has been named to the 2007 Barron's "Top 100 Women Financial Advisors."
