The Aloha 'Aina Earth Day recycling project held Saturday in Hale'iwa netted tons of metal and other items to benefit the Waialua Community Association.
Some 50 volunteers loaded containers with metal, tires, paper, green waste and cooking oil.
The project to clean the community and raise money through recycling brought in 50,000 pounds of scrap metal, said event coordinator Rene Mansho.
Volunteers also collected 200 tires, 150 gallons of cooking oil, a container of green waste, half a container of newspapers, cardboard, and HI-5 containers, and more than the usual number of cell phones and printer cartridges, Mansho said.
