Game at Wai'anae moved to Saturday

The Farrington at Wai'anae high school football game has been moved from tomorrow to Saturday because of smoke issues related to the brush fires in Waialua.
The game will be played at Wai'anae's Raymond Torii Stadium. The junior varsity game will start at the usual Saturday starting time of 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow about 25 minutes after the end of the JV game.
Wai'anae athletic director Glenn Tokunaga said school officials decided yesterday morning on the change. Students were released from school early Tuesday because of smoke problems from the fire that is on the Waialua side of the Wai'anae mountain range. Because school was closed, practice was canceled.
Wai'anae remained closed yesterday, but school officials got approval from its district office to allow the football team to hold practice yesterday because the air had cleared, Tokunaga said.
The game is a nonleague contest so it has no bearing on each team's regular-season standing. The Seariders are defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association West co-champions, while the Governors are defending East co-champions.
Ironically, the smoke has not been a problem at Waialua High, where athletic teams have been able to practice, athletic director Sharon Yoshimura said.
