The second annual Girls Who Surf Amateur Wahine Surf Contest takes place from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. today (registration is at 7 a.m.) at Kewalo Bowls. The contest is accepting registrations on the beach ($35).

There will be 19 heats of surfers competing in short, longboard and bodyboard categories. So far, entrants range in age from 4 to 49 and come from throughout the state and the Mainland. The goal of Girls Who Surf, which also offers lessons, is to get females out in the water. Founder Cherry Fu learned to surf after moving to Hawai'i in 2002, and she wants to share that experience with other women. For details: www.girlswhosurf.com.
