U.S. boys lose to Russia in volleyball

Russia defeated the United States, 17-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13, in the FIVB Boys' Youth World Championship Pool C preliminary round last night at the Gimnasio de Usos Multiples in Tijuana, Mexico.
Team USA, which includes three players from Hawai'i, is 1-2 and drops into the ninth- to 16th-place bracket starting Monday. Argentina and China, both 2-1, advanced to the medal bracket.
In last night's match, 'Iolani senior Brad Lawson, an outside hitter, had eight kills Punahou senior Kawika Shoji, a libero, had a team-high six digs, while Tri Bourne, an Academy of the Pacific alum, added an ace in a reserve role.
Murphy Troy of St. Louis, Mo., led the U.S. with 16 kills and two aces.
The U.S. boys are coached by University of Hawai'i men's associate head coach Tino Reyes.

CHINA SWEEPS U.S.
The United States women's national volleyball team lost to defending Olympic champion China, 25-18, 25-17, 25-22, in the FIVB World Grand Prix yesterday at Macau, China.
Former University of Hawai'i standout Heather Bown, of Yorba Linda, Calif., a U.S. middle blocker, subbed into the match in the first set and finished with four kills. Starting setter Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, another UH alum, of Honolulu, had 32 assists and a block.
Tayyiba Haneef-Park, of Laguna Hills, Calif., turned in a match-high 17 points on 16 kills and an ace for Team USA.
The United States (4-3) plays Cuba (4-3) today.
KANG FINAL TODAY
Kamehameha, Santa Barbara, 'Iolani and Redondo Beach won quarterfinal matches yesterday in the Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament at 'Iolani School.
In today's 9:45 a.m. semifinals, Kamehameha meets Santa Barbara and 'Iolani faces Redondo Beach. The championship is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

MAUI WOMAN SECOND
Kaitlyn Verfuerth, from California, defeated Maui's Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler, 6-3, 6-1, yesterday at the Parapan American Games' wheelchair tennis event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Verfuerth, ranked No. 23 in the world, was awarded a wildcard to the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.
Arnoult-Ritthaler and Verfuerth won doubles gold for the United States on Thursday with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Brazil's Samanta Almeida and Rejane Candida.
UNIVERSITY GAMES
GOLD FOR UH'S SMITH
University of Hawai'i senior Tanya Smith and the Australian women's basketball team won gold at the World University Games yesterday, defeating Russia 85-65 in the final at Bangkok, Thailand.
Smith, a Western Athletic Conference first-team pick last season, had one point, one rebound, one assist and a block in the win as the Aussies won five in a row to take the title.

WOMEN'S TOURNEY SET
The Women Drivers Golf Tournament, a benefit for the Women's Fund of Hawai'i, is scheduled for Monday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.
The Women's Fund is a grant-making foundation dedicated to supporting women and girls in Hawai'i.
