Police take part in shooter drills

The Maui Police Department has begun "Active Shooter Training" to prepare its officers to respond to shooting incidents at school and work sites.
Nearly 190 of MPD's 311 officers from a variety of units have participated so far in the 12-hour training, which included classroom lectures and simulated drills conducted at the new Pomaika'i Elementary School in Kahului before the school year began.
The training was led by Sgt. Mark Joaquin, who was assisted by Lt. Greg Moniz, Sgts. Mark Vickers, Barry Aoki, Dolly Poepoe and Mitchell Pellazar, and Detective Garret Tihada.
