Brennan named MVP of UH football team

Senior quarterback Colt Brennan yesterday was named the winner of the Alec Waterhouse Award as the University of Hawai'i football team's most valuable player for the 2007 season.
More than 1,100 attended the annual team banquet at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.
Brennan led the Warriors to a 12-0 regular season and a berth in the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl.
Senior defensive tackle Michael Lafaele, who has played despite a variety of injuries, was presented the Ben Yee Most Inspirational Award.
Freshman running back Kealoha Pilares earned the Scholar-Athlete Award.
The Captains Awards went to left guard Hercules Satele (offense), linebacker Adam Leonard (defense) and Guyton Galdeira (special teams).
The Warrior Club awards went to Brennan, Leonard and linebacker Timo Paepule (special teams).
Honored as the top scouts were quarterback Jake Santos (offense), defensive end Elliot Purcell (defense) and Kenny Estes (special teams).

U.S. MEN FALL SHORT
The U.S. men's national team, with Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum Clay Stanley in the starting lineup, saw a berth to the 2008 Olympics slip away in a 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-8 loss to Russia yesterday at the FIVB World Cup in Tokyo.
Russia (9-2), Bulgaria (9-2) and Brazil (9-1, entering final match against Japan) qualify for the Beijing Games as the top three World Cup finishers.
The U.S. (8-3) finished fourth for the fourth straight World Cup. Its next chance to qualify for the Olympics will be at the NORCECA zone qualifier in Puerto Rico, Jan. 5 to 13.
Gabe Gardner led the U.S. yesterday with 17 kills and four blocks. Reid Priddy added 13 kills, two blocks and one ace, and Riley Salmon had nine kills and one block.
"First of all, congratulations to Russia," U.S. head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "At the end of the match their tactics worked well, especially their service line. We had a chance to win this match but Russia was really good down the stretch."
BASKETBALL
HPU PREVAILS, 70-54
Jason Curtis scored 19 points as Hawai'i Pacific beat Henderson State, 70-54, yesterday at the Blaisdell Arena.
Rod Harmon, Kevin Schneider and Logan Wolf each added nine points for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 3-2.
Antoine Vinson scored 17 points for Henderson State (0-6), which is from Arkadelphia, Ark.
