Kamehameha senior Kanani Herring has been named Gatorade Hawai'i Volleyball Player of the Year for the third straight time. Herring led the Warriors to their third consecutive state championship title this year.

She was recently named Interscholastic League of Honolulu Player of the Year for the second straight season and signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i.

The reigning Advertiser Player of the Year, Herring recorded 351 kills and 223 digs for the Warriors this season. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter helped the Warriors finish third at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas while earning all-tournament honors at the event that draws some of the top prep teams in the nation.

Herring spent the summer playing for the U.S. Girls' Youth National Team. Less than a week after she returned from that, she helped Kamehameha win the Ann Kang Invitational, becoming the first Hawai'i squad since 1997 to win the tournament.

'IOLANI CLASSIC

GIRLS DIVISION BEGINS PLAY TOMORROW

A girls division has been added to the 'Iolani Prep Classic basketball tournament.

The girls tournament, created after the high school season switched from spring to winter, includes 'Iolani, Punahou, Kamehameha, Roosevelt and Moanalua. California schools include Narbonne Gauchos of Harbor City, Granada Matadors of Livermore and Redondo Beach Sea Hawks of Redondo Beach. The tournament runs Thursday to Saturday.

The boys tournament runs from Dec. 17 to 25 and features 'Iolani, University High, Kalani, 'Aiea, St. Joseph, McKinley, Ka'ahumanu Hou, Saint Louis, Roosevelt, Leilehua, Baldwin, Moanalua, Mid-Pacific and Kalaheo. Traveling here are LeFlore (Alabama), Mt. Vernon (New York), Mason County (Kentucky), Rice (New York), Ji Lin (China), ACD (Florida), Westchester (California), and Montrose (Maryland).
