The top appointed official in Mayor Mufi Hannemann's administration was suspended for one week in November without pay after a verbal altercation with midmanagement-level city employees, The Advertiser has learned.
The dispute between Managing Director Wayne Hashiro and at least two others occurred while they were in another city to attend a conference, according to sources familiar with the incident.
Hannemann would not comment on details of the altercation, but confirmed that he suspended Hashiro "for his conduct with several city employees."
"The five-day suspension has been served, and we are all focused on moving forward in doing the work of the people, including those involved in the incident," Hannemann said.
As managing director, Hashiro is the administration's second-in-command, overseeing city departments and decision-making.
Hannemann named Hashiro to the $120,000-a-year post in January 2006, and the City Council confirmed his nomination four months later.
Hashiro had previously headed Hannemann's Department of Design and Construction.
Hashiro could not be reached for comment late Friday, nor could the others involved in the altercation.
Hannemann said he takes such issues seriously, but that this one had not undermined his confidence in Hashiro.
"I hold the members of my Cabinet to an extremely high standard, as I believe we all have a duty to be accountable, not just in regards to our fiscal, civic and technical responsibilities, but also in our interactions with others," Hannemann said.
"Wayne has taken full responsibility for his own actions, and his humble response to me and to the employees has only affirmed to me the strength of his character, and made more resolute the trust and faith I have in him as my managing director."
