Los Angeles power Narbonne (Harbor City, Calif.) rallied past and then held off 'Iolani, 48-42, last night to take third place in the inaugural 'Iolani Girls Prep Classic.
Gabrielle Clark scored 17 points and Danielle Lenoir added 12 points to lead the Gauchos, who won LA City Section championships in 2003, 2005 and 2006, are coming off a 26-3 season and boast four WNBA players among their alumnae.
The Raiders controlled the tempo and led 25-19 after Dayna Jandoc's baseline layup with 5:21 left in the third period.
But the Gauchos soon went on a 16-0 run that stretched into the fourth quarter. They took the lead at 26-25 after Lenoir's steal, layup and foul, which was Jamie Smith's fourth.
Smith, an All-State senior center, sat out the remaining 2:42 of the third period and Narbonne's full-court pressure forced 'Iolani into several turnovers.
Smith's 15-foot jumper from the left wing finally broke Narbonne's run with 6:33 left in the game, and 'Iolani eventually clawed back to close it to 44-40 after Smith's fast-break layup with 24 seconds remaining.
But the Gauchos sank four straight free throws over the next 11 seconds to make it 48-40.
Smith finished with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds.
