BYUH men's basketball defeats CU in OT, 93-89

Lucas Alves scored 24 points and Wu Tai-hao added 22 points and 11 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i overcame a dynamic performance by Zack Whiting to beat Chaminade, 93-89, in overtime last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Eric Boyce, who scored 15 points for the Seasiders (17-5, 9-1 PacWest), hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 81.
In the extra period, Boyce hit a 3-pointer to make it 88-82. He also sank two free throws with two seconds left to cap the scoring.
Whiting had 35 points, eight rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Silverswords (13-8, 5-4). He scored all eight of CU's points in overtime, including a 3-pointer with four seconds left that made it 91-89.
HPU MEN EDGE HILO
Ryan Walker hit an off-balance shot from just inside the half-court line with one second left, lifting Hawai'i Pacific to a 65-64 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at the Kaiser High School gym.
The Sea Warriors (8-12, 2-7 PacWest), who led by as many as 15 points in the first half, trailed 64-62 with seven seconds to play after Daryl Harris hit the first of two free-throw attempts for the Vulcans (8-14, 5-5).
But Harris missed the second attempt, and Walker grabbed the rebound, dribbled past halfcourt and put up the long 3-pointer.
HILO WOMEN BEAT HPU
Amy Kaaiakamanu and Sheila Azevedo each had 20 points and eight rebounds as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 83-59, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's game at Kaiser High.
Krystlelyn Omlan added 13 points and Ashley Kualii 10 for the Vulcans (4-14, 3-7 PacWest).
Constance DeCaires scored 18 points, Kanani Thomas had 14, and Shannon Miyashiro added nine points and 12 rebounds for the Sea Warriors (1-20, 1-8).
BYUH WOMEN TOP CU
Latoya Wily had 24 points and 17 points as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Chaminade, 74-47, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's game at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Anny Soliai added 16 points and Lesina Funaki 10 for the Seasiders (10-10, 8-2 PacWest).
Katherine Carlisle scored 15 points, Simrin Cummins 14 and Brittnee Fonnesbeck 11 for the Silverswords (3-15, 2-7).
BASEBALL
KANSAS ROLLS PAST UHH
Ryne Price hit a three-run homer and Andy Marks teamed with three relievers on a five-hitter as Kansas beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 10-1, yesterday at Wong Stadium.
Marks allowed three hits and no runs in six innings while striking out six and walking one for the Jayhawks (4-0).
Matt Haasenritter batted 3 for 4, including an RBI double, to lead the Vulcans (0-8).
CHICO SWEEPS HPU
Kyle Gibson struck out 14 and allowed five hits in a seven-inning complete game as Chico (Calif.) State defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 10-1, yesterday to complete a sweep of a doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Aaron Demuth hit a two-run homer and Joe Finn hit a solo shot for the Wildcats (5-0).
Johnny Gentry had two hits, including an RBI double, for the Sea Warriors (0-5).
In the opener, Robby Scott had three hits to lead Chico State, which scored four runs in the top of the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie.
Danny Lee had two hits and two RBIs, and reliever Kaimi Mead allowed three hits and no runs in 4 1/3 innings for HPU.
SOFTBALL
UHH SWEEPS AGAIN
Hawai'i-Hilo swept a second straight doubleheader from Arkansas-Monticello, winning 7-6 and 12-4, yesterday at the UHH field.
In the opener, Brittany Dock doubled in pinch runner Glennis Kanae-Rodrigues with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win it for Hilo (4-0). Jenny Dunn had three hits, including a two-run homer for Arkansas-Monticello (0-4).
In the second game, Charity Senas hit a pair of two-run homers to propel the Vulcans, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit with five runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth.
WATER POLO
HAWAI'I SPLITS
Katie Rulon, Kelly Rulon and Jillian Kraus each scored three goals as second-ranked UCLA beat fifth-ranked Hawai'i, 12-4, last night at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
Anna Sieprath, Kelly Mason, Lisa van Raalte and Ryan Hanson-Swaner scored for the Rainbow Wahine (2-2), who led 3-2 after the first quarter.
Earlier, Mason scored three goals, and Emily Cox and Angela Turnbull each added two as the Rainbow Wahine beat No. 20 Indiana, 12-5.
