The Campbell girls soccer team fulfilled its coaches' promise, winning the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division II title yesterday.

"Our coaches promised to get us here," Campbell goalkeeper Jasmine "Oli" Kila said, after the Sabers outshot Roosevelt, 4-2, on penalty kicks for a 1-0 win at Kapolei High School.

Campbell (10-1-2), Roosevelt (11-1-1), third-place Waialua (9-3-1) and fourth-place Nanakuli (6-6-1) all received berths into this week's state tournament, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday. It is the first year of the Division II tournament.

"We're excited because we never made it here before," Sabers captain Emily Ragasa said. "We were all nervous and didn't know what to expect.

"But we did feel confident."

Rochelle White, Natalie Kinney, Christiana Alcosiba and Kaitlyn Simmonds made their penalty kicks for the Sabers. Christy Watanabe and Jenna Uyehara made theirs for the Rough Riders, who missed two shots. The fifth shooters did not have to kick.

"Hard work, perseverance, and pride," all factored into the Sabers' win, coach Michael Whitfield said.

Neither team could score through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

"Roosevelt has a really good offense, but we were ready," Ragasa said. "We were pumped up."

In a defensive struggle, both teams failed to gain any control on offense. Each had its best chance in the second half.

Campbell's Kinney outran the Roosevelt defense to track down a pass popped into the 18-yard box. She shot to the right, near post, but the ball missed wide in the 68th minute.

Two minutes later, Rough Rider sophomore forward Ashley Okazaki was open on a breakaway, but her shot also missed wide right.

"We're going to states now, and we'll make up for it, hopefully," Roosevelt assistant coach David Onizuka said.
